So you can always look there for more information if you'd like that.

00:02:11.761 --> 00:02:13.920
So let's get started here.

00:02:14.400 --> 00:02:15.040
Let's see.

00:02:15.040 --> 00:02:17.540
Some of you Doug from Los Angeles.

00:02:17.600 --> 00:02:18.160
Thank you.

00:02:29.695 --> 00:02:30.995
So good to see you.

00:02:31.455 --> 00:02:38.515
Anyone else out there that wants to comment, first name, and just where they're connecting from, that would be great.

00:02:40.015 --> 00:02:43.075
Always so happy to have you you all here.

00:02:43.455 --> 00:02:44.675
So let's get started.

00:02:45.830 --> 00:02:59.850
The spiritual direction certificate here at Divine Mercy University is a two year certificate, nondegree program, that trains people to be, spiritual directors within the Catholic Christian tradition.

00:03:01.565 --> 00:03:03.185
What do I mean by that?

00:03:05.805 --> 00:03:10.205
Well, I will be explaining spiritual direction a little bit more farther along the way.

00:03:10.205 --> 00:03:17.010
But, basically, the, the theology that we use is the Catholic Christian theology.

00:03:19.550 --> 00:03:23.250
You know, definitely very much within the Catholic understanding.

00:03:24.350 --> 00:03:29.730
But when we're talking about spiritual theology, much of that overlaps with Christian faiths.

00:03:29.870 --> 00:03:35.945
So, we do have people of other faiths of of Christian faiths.

00:03:36.245 --> 00:03:49.410
Well or, you know, I don't know how to say that exactly, but of Christian faiths in our program, Anglicans, evangelicals, people that want to want to learn in the Catholic Christian tradition.

00:03:50.990 --> 00:03:53.710
Thank you again for being here, all of you.

00:03:53.710 --> 00:03:56.610
Greg from Connecticut, Christy from Virginia.

00:03:57.870 --> 00:03:59.170
Happy to have you.

00:04:01.895 --> 00:04:06.155
So let's just talk a little bit, what's what we're gonna talk about this evening.

00:04:07.255 --> 00:04:14.235
Who we are as a university, what is spiritual direction, just about the program and the time frame and the tuition for the program.

00:04:15.630 --> 00:04:31.425
Divine Mercy University is a graduate school, primarily for psychologists and counselors or what we call the human sciences, here in Northern Virginia within, the DC Metro Area.

00:04:33.085 --> 00:04:57.100
It is dedicated to the mission of the integration of the human sciences and with faith, really grounding in in a understanding of the human person, an integral understanding of the human person, a whole understanding of the human person.

00:04:59.245 --> 00:05:09.745
And as a university, we are always trying to do research to update our underintegration of faith with the human sciences.

00:05:10.845 --> 00:05:37.495
In 2017, the university began developing the spiritual direction certificate to to bring this understanding of the human person, which is which is which is an integration of philosophy, theology, and psychology to bring this to the field of ministries and other helping professions.

00:05:39.360 --> 00:05:45.860
And that's, and seeing spiritual direction is just such an important place, and a one on one relationship.

00:05:47.440 --> 00:05:51.060
The university thought that they should work there.

00:05:51.935 --> 00:05:56.675
So in 2019, January 2019, we launched a spiritual direction certificate.

00:05:56.735 --> 00:06:00.675
So that means we're a little bit over five years old.

00:06:02.735 --> 00:06:07.235
And at this point, we already have a 170 graduates of the certificate.

00:06:10.150 --> 00:06:15.530
So this kind of just explains the programs that we have and who we are.

00:06:17.830 --> 00:06:26.155
We are a university accredited, by all the different boards of accreditation necessary to be accredited by.

00:06:26.855 --> 00:06:44.960
Just for you to know, it doesn't really affect that much the spiritual direction certificate because we're not a degree program, But it's good to for you to know that we do have all these accreditations for our to run as a university and for our counseling and psychology programs.

00:06:51.755 --> 00:07:00.015
So what I wanna talk about now before we get into the program itself is kind of the the framework of the program.

00:07:00.395 --> 00:07:03.695
What do we you know, how do we describe spiritual direction?

00:07:03.960 --> 00:07:08.040
I know this is important for people when they're looking for training for spiritual direction.

00:07:08.040 --> 00:07:14.860
That's why we wanna talk about it here right at the beginning, so that you can see if this is what you're looking for.

00:07:15.960 --> 00:07:38.230
We do, you know, find our definition of spiritual direction within the Catholic understanding of spiritual direction, within that Catholic Christian tradition of spiritual direction, you know, as a type of accompaniment, assisting a person, on their path to the Lord.

00:07:39.010 --> 00:08:00.780
They act of deep listening and being there for them, listening to the directee to help them to deepen in their experience of the Lord and his narrative and their advice, the act of being there for them, to walk alongside with them them and their pilgrimage to God, not designed as therapy.

00:08:02.040 --> 00:08:07.500
It's not designed for problem solving, but more as a deep listening.

00:08:08.120 --> 00:08:10.060
Of course, there are times of teaching.

00:08:10.440 --> 00:08:18.345
There are times maybe when there is some problem solving that happens, but it's not that it's designated or designed for that purpose.

00:08:18.725 --> 00:08:19.785
It's not coaching.

00:08:22.485 --> 00:08:27.225
It's not catechism class or, you know, OCIA or RCIA.

00:08:29.500 --> 00:08:33.420
It's really to help someone to grow in that relationship with god.

00:08:33.420 --> 00:08:41.955
So it's usually given to people that have already made some type of commitment to grow in their relationship with the lord and want some help in doing that.

00:08:42.675 --> 00:08:47.495
Another way to understand it is, you know, helping someone to become a disciple of the lord.

00:08:48.195 --> 00:08:56.215
As we'll talk about a little bit later as, you know, Christ himself walked with his apostles and taught them this way of following him.

00:08:57.330 --> 00:09:07.510
And we if we, you know, are interested in this, it's probably because we have been discipled by the lord, and we probably have had a spiritual director.

00:09:07.890 --> 00:09:14.745
And we want to help other people to be helped the way that we were and to grow in our relationship with the lord.

00:09:14.745 --> 00:09:18.765
So this is kind of the way that we understand it.

00:09:23.865 --> 00:09:34.050
Spiritual direction has really seen a resurgence, within the Catholic Christian world since, you know, probably in the seventies.

00:09:36.750 --> 00:09:57.540
Just because, you know, really, the way that I think of it is because of the emphasis that the Catholic church put on the lay, lay people being involved in, helping others to grow closer to the Lord and also, in Vatican too, the way that it talks about the universal call to holiness.

00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:07.220
That holiness was not just something for ministers or priests or religious, but it was something that a path and a desire that the lord wanted for each of us.

00:10:07.440 --> 00:10:08.960
So then it became kind of clear.

00:10:08.960 --> 00:10:24.355
Well, if the lord is calling me to this this, you know, like, this quote here that's from pope Benedict, if the lord is calling me to this, you know, life in him, then I do probably need someone to help me along that.

00:10:26.370 --> 00:10:42.485
And this is what pope Benedict says who, at the time, I don't think he was a pope when he said this, but everyone, in fact, especially those who have heeded the divine call to follow Christ closely, needs to be accompanied personally by a guide, reliable in doctrine and expert in the things of god.

00:10:44.145 --> 00:10:44.625
Right?

00:10:44.625 --> 00:10:50.945
So this is what a spiritual director, another way to talk about a spiritual director and also this need that we have.

00:10:50.945 --> 00:10:54.600
And and pope Benedict says here, it's not just for Catholics.

00:10:54.600 --> 00:11:00.220
Every Christian who wishes to live responsibly his or her baptism, that is this new life in Christ.

00:11:00.920 --> 00:11:06.600
So the catechism of the Catholic church, talks about spiritual directors in this number.

00:11:06.600 --> 00:11:16.595
It says the holy spirit gives to certain of the faithful the gifts of wisdom, faith, and discernment for the sake of this common good, which is prayer, spiritual direction.

00:11:16.975 --> 00:11:20.275
That parenthetical expression is of the catechism.

00:11:20.415 --> 00:11:21.635
We didn't put that in.

00:11:22.010 --> 00:11:25.930
Men and women so endowed are true servants of the living tradition of prayer.

00:11:25.930 --> 00:11:30.730
So it talks about spiritual directors as being servants of the living tradition of prayer.

00:11:30.730 --> 00:11:50.465
And you can imagine, you know, servants of that that person's, you know, that directee's prayer and also of this tradition, you know, like, learning how to pray and be with the lord and follow him and then helping others to do the same, although they're going to be, you know, unique and different than you.

00:11:55.460 --> 00:12:03.240
So just other ways that you can talk about spiritual direction, focus on a relationship with god, something to be discovered, deepened, celebrated.

00:12:07.135 --> 00:12:10.655
Definitely for people that want to grow in their relationship with the lord.

00:12:10.655 --> 00:12:10.895
Right?

00:12:10.895 --> 00:12:16.035
The biblical roots of spiritual direction also confirm its necessity.

00:12:16.175 --> 00:12:23.120
God it seems that god has always given us people to help us, in our lives, in our relationship with him.

00:12:23.120 --> 00:12:29.620
You know, in the Old Testament prophets, figures of faith, and in the New Testament, the, apostles.

00:12:31.885 --> 00:12:47.140
And Jesus himself walked with the apostles, as I was saying before, to help them to learn how, to follow him and to learn how to live this relationship with the Lord, this new life in in him.

00:12:47.280 --> 00:12:47.780
Right?

00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:50.980
So spiritual direction is a sacred and safe space.

00:12:51.280 --> 00:13:00.180
We talk about this here because it is a space where, a, you know, a good relationship of trust needs to be able to grow.

00:13:00.785 --> 00:13:03.185
It's a sacred space, safe space.

00:13:03.185 --> 00:13:14.565
It is a space of confidentiality, where the directee, discerns and speaks about those innermost thoughts and feelings, doubts, fears.

00:13:15.810 --> 00:13:22.710
And, and in speaking them and talking to them sometimes realizes just what's happening inside of themselves.

00:13:22.770 --> 00:13:23.270
Right?

00:13:25.650 --> 00:13:39.935
Definitely allows the person to open their heart, you know, and to really bring yourself to, this moment so as to share.

00:13:43.240 --> 00:13:49.260
This is a quote taken from a document of the Catholic church that I think also came out in 2011.

00:13:49.480 --> 00:13:58.695
The principal objective of spiritual direction is to discern the signs of God's will for our journey of vocation, prayer, perfection for our daily life and for our fraternal mission.

00:13:58.695 --> 00:14:08.935
So, you know, it's to discern where we're seeing the Lord in our lives, where we're encountering him, what he might be saying to us, where he might be calling us.

00:14:08.935 --> 00:14:23.600
And this is done just by that deep listening of the director as we kind of tell our story and talk about these things, and asking us questions to deepen in this and to understand where the lord might be.

00:14:28.255 --> 00:14:40.590
Sometimes, you know, we call this myths about spiritual direction, but, you know, what are the things that maybe can be misconceptions about spiritual direction that you might have heard out there.

00:14:41.530 --> 00:14:55.355
While all priests are spiritual directors, it's true that all priests are really given training to give spiritual counsel, and a lot of priests nowadays in their seminary days are learning how to give pastoral counseling.

00:14:55.415 --> 00:14:55.915
Right?

00:14:56.775 --> 00:15:01.575
And spiritual counseling, you know, spiritual direction is a type of spiritual counseling.

00:15:01.575 --> 00:15:25.105
But in that document that I quoted before, that's here, the priest minister divine mercy and a for confessors and spiritual directors that the Catholic church put out in 2011, it did say that in present circumstances, while there's an increasing demand for spiritual direction on the part of the faithful, there is likewise an increasing need to better prepare priests to give spiritual direction.

00:15:25.725 --> 00:15:32.305
Such training should enable them to afford spiritual counsel with greater diligence, discernment, and spiritual accompaniment.

00:15:33.270 --> 00:15:42.570
So this is why, the church kinda has made a shift here, asking priests to be trained to be spiritual directors.

00:15:44.070 --> 00:15:50.335
And so that's something that, you know, we definitely have priests that go through our program and that are doing that.

00:15:52.635 --> 00:15:58.920
And, also, be another thing is that you might meet priests that do not want to be spiritual directors.

00:15:58.920 --> 00:16:03.980
They feel like they don't have the training or they don't have the availability to be able to do that.

00:16:04.600 --> 00:16:16.995
So you can't just assume that any priest that you approach feels like he's got this preparation or has gotten this preparation or feels that he's got that availability to be spiritual director.

00:16:17.695 --> 00:16:19.775
Definitely, they can give you spiritual counsel.

00:16:19.775 --> 00:16:20.995
They do that in confession.

00:16:21.375 --> 00:16:24.995
Sometimes if you have appointments with them, the same thing.

00:16:26.900 --> 00:16:31.720
And sometimes I think you might if you're Christians, you might find the same thing in your churches.

00:16:34.260 --> 00:16:37.960
Another misconception is laypeople cannot be spiritual directors.

00:16:39.445 --> 00:16:46.265
The Catholic church doesn't have any document that says who can or cannot be spiritual direction directors.

00:16:46.485 --> 00:16:46.985
Right?

00:16:47.845 --> 00:16:55.530
And I don't think necessary you know, there's so many different Christian denominations, but it really kinda depends on their traditions.

00:16:55.590 --> 00:16:58.330
But, typically, there's not this type of restriction.

00:16:59.670 --> 00:17:04.650
And in addition, within the Catholic church, there's a long history of laypeople being spiritual directors.

00:17:06.515 --> 00:17:10.035
And, again, from this document, here's a quote.

00:17:10.035 --> 00:17:21.895
While spiritual direction was always imparted by monks and priests, other members of the faithful religious and lay, Saint Catherine of Siena, for example, who maybe most people don't even realize she wasn't a religious.

00:17:22.800 --> 00:17:26.820
She was a laywoman, have have also given spiritual counsel.

00:17:27.200 --> 00:17:35.140
There to be found also well formed laypeople, both men and women, who offer this this service of counsel along the journey in holiness.

00:17:35.200 --> 00:17:46.335
I always like to point out the early desert fathers and mothers as examples of this and also Saint John Paul the second's first spiritual director who was a layman.

00:17:46.715 --> 00:17:52.815
And Saint John Paul the second credits him for having an you know, introduced him to to mystical prayer.

00:17:54.610 --> 00:18:02.390
So often people might need someone that they can speak to that that they can relate to that has their particular life vocation.

00:18:03.730 --> 00:18:14.875
Maybe they're looking for a man or woman who has a similar walk of life as they do, someone that they can trust, someone that feel that they can, that feels that they understand them.

00:18:15.415 --> 00:18:24.990
So the the place of lady people giving spiritual direction is considerable, and it's a great benefit, to their faith communities.

00:18:25.930 --> 00:18:31.690
Another myth is that Catholic parishes or diocese don't have spiritual directors.

00:18:31.690 --> 00:18:36.750
And, and I don't think that this is true either just through my own experience.

00:18:36.970 --> 00:18:49.875
This is a quote from that same document just saying that sometimes ecclesiastical authorities or communities can, set up offices, where they see about offering spiritual direction to people.

00:18:49.935 --> 00:18:50.435
Right?

00:18:51.190 --> 00:19:04.970
I know that some of the people that come to our program have been sent by their parish priest to or their, faith leaders to get trained at our program so that they can be a spiritual director and offer that to their faith community.

00:19:05.855 --> 00:19:20.655
And I know that there are diocese that have offices where they and they train spiritual directors, where they vet spiritual directors, where they publish lists of spiritual directors so that the faithful of their local community can find those.

00:19:20.655 --> 00:19:32.150
So these are some things sometimes things that we hear, but, you know, we always just like to address these things to kind of understand because we definitely have laypeople in our program.

00:19:34.135 --> 00:19:38.475
We've got all vocations in our program, which is really beautiful and very enriching.

00:19:41.975 --> 00:19:48.630
So let's move to the spiritual direction certificate itself, and let's talk about it.

00:19:49.110 --> 00:19:59.610
I forgot to mention, if you have any questions as we're going along, just put them into I think there should be, like, a q and a.

00:20:00.870 --> 00:20:01.110
Yeah.

00:20:01.110 --> 00:20:02.625
There should be a q and a.

00:20:02.865 --> 00:20:13.445
So you can just put them into there, and at the end, I'll look there and answer them, since as I know there might be things that happen, information that you need as we go along.

00:20:13.905 --> 00:20:18.820
So the spiritual direction certificate, as I mentioned at the beginning, takes two years to complete.

00:20:19.200 --> 00:20:28.180
Sometimes it takes a little bit longer because of the practicum hours if you're doing those a little bit slower, but the courses themselves can be completed in two years.

00:20:28.720 --> 00:20:30.500
They're all online courses.

00:20:30.560 --> 00:20:31.860
There's six of them.

00:20:33.355 --> 00:20:44.975
They're what we call asynchronous, meaning that you, work through each of the modules, or each of the weeks of the courses with a cohort.

00:20:45.435 --> 00:20:57.740
But within that time, within that week, you can do the the work whenever it fits into your schedule and, just respecting the deadlines that are in the course themselves.

00:20:57.880 --> 00:20:58.120
Right?

00:20:58.120 --> 00:21:02.775
There's usually a couple, there's usually, like, two assignments due each week.

00:21:04.615 --> 00:21:09.515
We do offer live meetings, that are in real time.

00:21:10.135 --> 00:21:14.235
They're never required, and they're always recorded.

00:21:15.910 --> 00:21:23.430
Just to sometimes, you know, we've just seen in our experience that students want that opportunity to have some face to face with their instructors.

00:21:23.430 --> 00:21:25.930
So the instructors always do hold those meetings.

00:21:27.045 --> 00:21:31.465
So there are six courses for the certificate, and there are two residencies.

00:21:32.005 --> 00:21:41.145
So that means that twice in your time of studying the certificate, you'll have to come to Northern Virginia for a residency.

00:21:42.490 --> 00:21:46.830
We're actually running one right now, and these days, they start on Wednesday evening.

00:21:47.130 --> 00:21:51.550
So we started last night, and they ran to Sunday lunch.

00:21:52.730 --> 00:21:55.310
I'll explain a little bit more of those going forward.

00:21:55.475 --> 00:21:58.935
Then we also have a requirement of sixty practicum hours.

00:21:59.235 --> 00:22:08.275
That means that at some point in the program, in the fifth course, we'll you will have prepared you sufficiently to start seeing people in spiritual direction.

00:22:08.275 --> 00:22:17.570
We ask you to log those hours, and we ask you to get forty eight hours of seeing people in spiritual direction and twelve hours of supervision.

00:22:17.870 --> 00:22:27.655
The supervision is actually given within the fifth and sixth courses themselves, so So it's not like you have to find a supervisor or anything like that.

00:22:28.275 --> 00:22:37.255
We just ask you to log those hours so that you between the forty eight hours of seeing spiritual direction and the twelve hours of supervision, you fulfill your 60 practicum hours.

00:22:38.990 --> 00:22:43.970
So these are the courses, the six courses that are part of the certificate.

00:22:44.670 --> 00:22:52.530
There if you go on our website, you know, it's the the you see the address there below.

00:22:53.625 --> 00:22:57.085
We're on the divine mercy website under academic programs.

00:22:58.265 --> 00:22:59.645
There are course descriptions.

00:22:59.705 --> 00:23:03.645
So there's a paragraph describing what each of these courses are about.

00:23:03.865 --> 00:23:23.265
You'll see that these courses really are addressing two different aspects, in spiritual direction, which is that theological, spiritual theology, development of the life of grace within the human person and that relationship with the Lord, and then the human elements.

00:23:24.045 --> 00:23:38.490
What human development is, human relationships, and those skills that you'll need, those human listening skills, those human interaction skills that you'll need as a spiritual director and the training in those.

00:23:39.750 --> 00:23:43.850
So we're always working in our program in knowledge and skills.

00:23:44.550 --> 00:23:45.030
Right?

00:23:45.030 --> 00:24:05.105
So content, readings, videos, definitely essays, although they're not that long, different activities to help you to learn and to know content, actual information, and then training, in skills.

00:24:05.670 --> 00:24:18.330
Skill training where we're doing triad videos, all over the Internet, right, to help you to keep on learning your skills that you'll need to be a spiritual director.

00:24:21.045 --> 00:24:23.865
So I talked about the residencies a little bit earlier.

00:24:24.245 --> 00:24:25.045
I mentioned them.

00:24:25.045 --> 00:24:27.865
The residencies, as I said, are two of them.

00:24:28.085 --> 00:24:32.825
They're you know, the program is two years, so you're coming once a year to Sterling, Virginia.

00:24:33.480 --> 00:24:40.700
And it's a and it's an opportunity to put into practice the skills and the knowledge that you're learning as you're going through the course.

00:24:41.560 --> 00:24:50.025
The first residency happens at the end of your third course, so kind of finishing your first year.

00:24:50.405 --> 00:24:57.465
And the second residency start, is at this week two of your fifth course.

00:24:57.925 --> 00:25:01.785
So it's kind of, like, halfway through your second year.

00:25:03.320 --> 00:25:18.945
And each residency has, as you saw with a name on it, the, it's basically about the the human skills that you need to be a spiritual director, but they just, you know, the first one is the basic listening skills and sitting with someone.

00:25:18.945 --> 00:25:27.025
And then the second residency is a little bit more complicated because we're we're getting you ready to start seeing people in spiritual direction.

00:25:27.025 --> 00:25:30.005
So it's a it's more complex themes.

00:25:31.720 --> 00:25:49.895
The way that we run each residency, you know, the first and the second are very similar, but the themes in the second one are just more about boundaries and, just kind of the invisible interplay that might be happening in a relationship so that you know how to manage that.

00:25:54.755 --> 00:25:58.850
So each, you know, we work on a term based.

00:26:00.110 --> 00:26:01.890
We run three terms a year.

00:26:02.270 --> 00:26:08.370
Each term is eight weeks, and you only do one course at a time.

00:26:11.105 --> 00:26:18.165
And, usually, it takes about six to nine hours a week, when you're taking a course.

00:26:18.385 --> 00:26:23.045
Then we roughly have a break of about nine to ten weeks between each term.

00:26:23.470 --> 00:26:27.390
Although between the summer term and the fall term, it's just four weeks.

00:26:27.390 --> 00:26:33.010
But right now, we're gonna be finishing up the term, and I think in two weeks, and then we won't start class again until January.

00:26:33.390 --> 00:26:36.770
And as I said before, it's completed in two years.

00:26:40.005 --> 00:26:44.265
The cost of the certificate is $800 per course.

00:26:45.125 --> 00:26:58.100
And, when when you have a residency, it's 1,350, and that covers the teaching, the material, most of the meals, and putting you up in a hotel.

00:26:58.100 --> 00:27:07.480
But what we don't cover is you getting to and from Northern Virginia and, three of the dinners we ask you to take care of.

00:27:09.665 --> 00:27:17.765
If you have to continue in practicum, in different moments within the course, it's $50 a term.

00:27:18.065 --> 00:27:21.265
If you need to get supervision during that time, it's a $100.

00:27:21.265 --> 00:27:27.950
But, usually, for students that, you know, you don't do probably more than two terms if you needed to do that.

00:27:28.010 --> 00:27:36.670
So it's not it's either, you know, a $100 or 200 on the I think it's about 7,600 when you all this add this up altogether.

00:27:41.985 --> 00:27:42.885
How to apply?

00:27:44.305 --> 00:27:50.885
We do have a two tier application process where you enter into the first two courses.

00:27:51.600 --> 00:27:53.920
So you do that by going on our website.

00:27:53.920 --> 00:27:55.540
There's an application there.

00:27:55.680 --> 00:28:02.980
You play the $25 application, and you just provide a letter of recommendation from your pastor or a leader of your faith community.

00:28:04.835 --> 00:28:07.635
And that's how you enter into that first tier of the program.

00:28:07.635 --> 00:28:19.190
And then when you're in the program, finishing 200 is after that experience, if you wanna apply to the second tier of the program, which is 300 through through 600, you do there.

00:28:19.190 --> 00:28:20.630
There's no cost for it.

00:28:20.630 --> 00:28:22.730
We and we guide you through that process.

00:28:26.470 --> 00:28:39.525
If you would like more information about the program or get on the phone call, with someone to just talk about it and get some more questions answered, you can contact Greg Shapiro.

00:28:40.465 --> 00:28:43.685
He is our admissions adviser here at the university.

00:28:44.500 --> 00:28:58.920
This is his phone number that also accepts calls and text messages, and he will get in touch with you and set up a time, to be able to talk, so that he can answer your questions about the program.

00:29:00.895 --> 00:29:01.215
Okay.

00:29:01.215 --> 00:29:03.615
I wanted to go to any questions you might have.

00:29:03.615 --> 00:29:07.075
Feel free to put them in the chat or in the q and a.

00:29:07.455 --> 00:29:22.620
If there's anything that you would like to know about the program, hope I've given you enough information just generally so that you understand, kind of its dynamics, the way it works, and what we're kind of striving for.

00:29:26.040 --> 00:29:26.440
Okay.

00:29:26.440 --> 00:29:31.885
Doug, can you put your question in the chat or in the q and a?

00:29:36.025 --> 00:29:37.805
I'm going to stop sharing.

00:29:42.810 --> 00:29:45.070
That helps me to be able to see the q and a.

00:29:46.650 --> 00:29:47.370
Okay, Doug.

00:29:47.370 --> 00:29:48.270
I see this.

00:29:48.970 --> 00:29:50.990
I don't see your question yet, though.

00:30:11.580 --> 00:30:12.080
Questions?

00:30:14.300 --> 00:30:22.000
Doug, are you able to put that into the, the key the chat box?

00:30:25.375 --> 00:30:25.775
Okay.

00:30:25.775 --> 00:30:26.275
Great.

00:30:27.295 --> 00:30:29.955
Is this certification accepted by most diocese?

00:30:30.815 --> 00:30:31.295
Yes.

00:30:31.295 --> 00:30:32.035
It is.

00:30:33.055 --> 00:30:40.860
So just for you to know, and you probably all know this, like, spiritual direction is not a licensed field or ministry.

00:30:42.520 --> 00:30:52.140
But what most ISAs wanna see is that you've been trained by a serious institution, and they might even wanna see your curriculum.

00:30:52.520 --> 00:30:53.020
Right?

00:30:53.815 --> 00:30:56.055
And that's what the university can offer.

00:30:56.055 --> 00:30:56.555
Right?

00:30:56.935 --> 00:31:00.875
We have not had a problem that this has not been accepted by diocese.

00:31:00.935 --> 00:31:06.555
The university has a pretty good name, out there, so it's pretty well esteemed.

00:31:06.615 --> 00:31:13.900
And I think the work of our own of our own diet of our own students.

00:31:14.440 --> 00:31:14.760
Yes.

00:31:14.760 --> 00:31:19.660
We've got students from the Archdiocese of, Los Angeles and San Diego.

00:31:20.200 --> 00:31:28.035
San Bernardino, I'm not certain, but I know of Los Mercedes of Los Angeles and San Diego, we both have.

00:31:28.735 --> 00:31:29.235
Orange.

00:31:30.575 --> 00:31:31.055
Yes.

00:31:31.055 --> 00:31:34.675
Actually, there's two sisters that are right that are with us right now.

00:31:39.330 --> 00:31:43.570
Is Catherine asked, is there anything special in traditional student needs?

00:31:43.570 --> 00:31:43.890
No.

00:31:43.890 --> 00:31:45.830
There isn't, Catherine.

00:31:49.195 --> 00:31:59.115
Sometimes when we've had students of course, if you're coming from Canada, there's there's no difficulties because even coming for the residencies, it's just not a long stay, so you don't need any special visa.

00:31:59.115 --> 00:32:00.475
But sometimes we've had to help.

00:32:00.475 --> 00:32:08.300
Like, we've had some students come from Africa or things like that, and we've had to help them get their their, visa for them.

00:32:11.080 --> 00:32:16.360
Jasmine, the tuition total is about 7,600.

00:32:16.360 --> 00:32:22.385
Each course, it costs 800, and the residency is 1,350.

00:32:23.085 --> 00:32:25.825
You can see that that breakdown is also on the website.

00:32:26.925 --> 00:32:31.265
Jasmine, the course is, two years.

00:32:31.860 --> 00:32:35.480
I know that you got here a little bit late, so no worries.

00:32:37.220 --> 00:32:42.760
You take three courses three courses a year, and the certificate takes two years.

00:32:43.875 --> 00:32:47.955
I'm happy to see you here.

00:32:47.955 --> 00:32:50.915
Thank you for your interest in becoming spiritual directors.

00:32:50.915 --> 00:32:52.775
There's definitely a need out there.

00:32:52.995 --> 00:33:05.210
And I know with my experience of and now I've been the director of the program, it's gonna be five years And, in July, so I just finished four years.

00:33:05.210 --> 00:33:05.710
Right?

00:33:07.930 --> 00:33:19.985
The students are just so varied, and the ways that they got into the program and the way that they've gotten into spiritual direction is just so is so interesting, but just really beautiful people.

00:33:19.985 --> 00:33:21.445
I always am so inspired.

00:33:23.505 --> 00:33:26.165
Jasmine, the course is not self paced.

00:33:26.520 --> 00:33:31.660
You go through each course with your cohort, and there's weekly assignments.

00:33:32.680 --> 00:33:42.255
So we ask you within that eight week period, you're going through the course week by week with your cohort and discussions and assignments and things like that.

00:33:42.415 --> 00:33:49.555
Of course, you can do all that reading and the assignments on your own time, just respecting those weekly deadlines, but it's not self paced.

00:33:56.200 --> 00:33:57.980
Anyone else have any other questions?

00:34:14.445 --> 00:34:29.580
As I said, you know, the students are diverse group, men, women, sisters, deacons, Catholics, Christians, priests, full time missionaries.

00:34:32.680 --> 00:34:33.740
It's really beautiful.

00:34:37.895 --> 00:34:39.815
I, myself, am a spiritual director.

00:34:39.815 --> 00:34:43.435
Sometimes I get the opportunity to teach some of the courses.

00:34:44.535 --> 00:34:45.675
I'm not too busy.

00:34:49.830 --> 00:34:51.450
Specific parish rule.

00:34:51.510 --> 00:34:52.010
Okay.

00:34:52.230 --> 00:35:02.730
So it really depends upon the parish, Doug, if they if they have a spiritual directors on staff or not.

00:35:04.205 --> 00:35:07.645
So this doesn't necessarily give you a job at a parish.

00:35:07.645 --> 00:35:12.705
It really just depends upon the parish priest and and how they work with spiritual directors.

00:35:16.140 --> 00:35:17.360
Definitely helps you.

00:35:17.820 --> 00:35:33.725
I know that some of the spirit our spiritual directors have got involved in chaplain ministry at hospitals, even though some of that training, you might need a little bit more specific training to go into a hospital environment, but, definitely, our training is a good way to begin that.

00:35:37.705 --> 00:35:48.490
And, also, people support at retreats, especially retreat house often are looking for spiritual directors to to walk along with people and their retreat experience.

00:35:53.350 --> 00:35:57.350
So, Doug, yeah, the secular world in business, you definitely could.

00:35:57.350 --> 00:36:07.055
We definitely have, men and women that are in the business world that get to know people that want spiritual direction.

00:36:07.115 --> 00:36:07.615
Right?

00:36:07.755 --> 00:36:09.435
But this is not coaching.

00:36:09.435 --> 00:36:13.355
This is not like life coaching or even Catholic coaching or Christian coaching.

00:36:13.355 --> 00:36:17.460
This is really directed to accompany someone in their spiritual life.

00:36:20.480 --> 00:36:22.260
Jasmine, the course schedule.

00:36:22.880 --> 00:36:23.380
Yeah.

00:36:23.440 --> 00:36:23.940
Gosh.

00:36:24.560 --> 00:36:27.300
I'm just realizing I don't have that slide for that.

00:36:27.520 --> 00:36:28.980
So thank you for that.

00:36:29.105 --> 00:36:36.085
So we open, courses in August, January, and May.

00:36:36.385 --> 00:36:52.430
And the courses are eight weeks, so they run, like, the end of August to the middle of October, beginning of January to the middle of March, and end of May to the, middle of July.

00:36:54.730 --> 00:37:08.705
Jasmine, there really aren't scholarships available just because we try to, do the lowest cost possible so that people, can take this.

00:37:08.845 --> 00:37:13.610
And then we do have what's called the STC grant.

00:37:13.610 --> 00:37:25.525
You'll see it on our website where we say, you know, if you're interested in this program or if you're interested in in giving money so other people can study this program, we do do that.

00:37:26.065 --> 00:37:29.445
But that's really based on how much money we get in.

00:37:30.305 --> 00:37:33.285
It hasn't been as successful as I wish it could be.

00:37:33.425 --> 00:37:33.825
Right?

00:37:33.825 --> 00:37:38.805
We need people to step forward and wanna give money so that we have money to be able to give away.

00:37:41.480 --> 00:37:43.420
So that's basically how that works.

00:37:50.440 --> 00:37:52.860
Doug, I hope I answered that question that you had.

00:37:58.605 --> 00:37:59.985
Any other questions?

00:38:01.565 --> 00:38:02.465
Thanks, Doug.

00:38:12.180 --> 00:38:15.080
Just make sure I've answered the ones that you've sent them.

00:38:22.465 --> 00:38:29.365
Greg can also get you in touch of someone that's graduated from the program, if that would be helpful for you to talk to someone maybe in your area.

00:38:30.145 --> 00:38:35.605
As I said, we've got a pretty good network of graduates throughout the country and and in Canada.

00:38:35.745 --> 00:38:45.990
So sometimes that helps too to talk to someone that's been through the program that's maybe in your area or has a similar you know, that's if you're a deacon, that's a deacon or something like that.

00:38:51.695 --> 00:38:53.215
Doug, do you get barred from the program?

00:38:53.215 --> 00:39:09.870
We do ask you, Doug, to take the first two courses consecutively just because there's a lot of spacing between the courses, and we want you to get a real sense of the fit for the program and, and learning, like a learning rhythm.

00:39:09.870 --> 00:39:10.270
Right?

00:39:10.270 --> 00:39:19.005
So, so we ask you to take those two course courses consecutively and then to go into that third course right after that.

00:39:19.245 --> 00:39:23.745
And then you can space out your fourth, fifth, and sixth course.

00:39:24.525 --> 00:39:29.505
I forget the actual I think we asked you to have it done by three years.

00:39:30.525 --> 00:39:31.025
No?

00:39:31.165 --> 00:39:33.505
So that gives you a little bit of room there.

00:39:36.560 --> 00:39:39.140
Arturo, I see you're raising your hand.

00:39:39.520 --> 00:39:41.700
Could you put the question in the chat box?

00:39:48.325 --> 00:39:52.985
And, Doug, of course, sometimes life just happens, and there are some exceptions that just need to be considered.

00:39:53.045 --> 00:39:56.825
But in general, that's that's how the policies work.

00:40:08.640 --> 00:40:09.140
Great.

00:40:10.000 --> 00:40:12.500
I am gonna put my email here.

00:40:12.560 --> 00:40:19.915
It's also on the website in case there's any type of questions that you have that you wanna follow-up with me.

00:40:21.655 --> 00:40:24.155
Greg's email is also on the website too.

00:40:25.175 --> 00:40:28.075
Oh, Arturo, do you have the book, the divine mercy in Spanish?

00:40:28.615 --> 00:40:29.915
I don't think we do.

00:40:29.975 --> 00:40:35.010
Even though our university is called divine mercy, it's not like we publish those books.

00:40:37.150 --> 00:40:42.350
So probably some people have them just that they read the the diary of Divine Mercy.

00:40:42.350 --> 00:40:42.850
Right?

00:40:42.910 --> 00:40:46.770
But, it's not like we sell them or have them.

00:40:48.065 --> 00:40:55.845
But I would think that you would go like, I know in Massachusetts, there is a shrine to divine mercy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

00:40:56.545 --> 00:41:01.205
And I would sure I would think that their website website would have that book in Spanish.

00:41:01.265 --> 00:41:13.810
Right, Thank you so much.

00:41:14.430 --> 00:41:17.250
If there's not any more questions, I'm gonna sign off.

00:41:25.575 --> 00:41:29.355
Well, god bless you all, and thank you.

00:41:29.655 --> 00:41:30.695
Where's your email?

00:41:30.695 --> 00:41:35.730
Jasmine, I put it in there to everyone, so I just did.

00:41:37.550 --> 00:41:38.850
So I'll put it again.

00:41:40.990 --> 00:41:44.210
It's also on the website of the university.

00:41:46.955 --> 00:41:56.415
Let me just show that to you guys so that you see the website of the university so you get to see what I'm talking about.

00:42:06.770 --> 00:42:09.490
So this is the website of the university that I'm talking about.

00:42:09.490 --> 00:42:13.030
If you go to academic programs, you'll see spiritual direction certificate.

00:42:13.810 --> 00:42:17.555
Click there, and that's where the information of the course descriptions, tuition.

00:42:19.055 --> 00:42:19.555
Alright.

00:42:20.095 --> 00:42:24.435
So you can see the URL here to find marcy.edu.

00:42:25.295 --> 00:42:30.705
We are out of Northern Virginia and Metro DC.

00:42:33.965 --> 00:42:35.165
Well, thank you all.

00:42:35.165 --> 00:42:36.705
Good night, and God bless.
