children when I was young. 00:22:35.045 --> 00:22:37.545 I never saw him and never heard from him. 00:22:38.020 --> 00:22:42.120 And until I was 18, I actually believed that he was dead. 00:22:43.140 --> 00:22:48.280 When my aunt Emma, my father's sister, told me he was alive, I was astonished. 00:22:49.540 --> 00:22:55.855 I gave her my graduation picture to give to him and hoped that he would contact me. 00:22:56.955 --> 00:22:58.015 He never did. 00:22:59.035 --> 00:23:04.815 Later, when I committed my life to Christ, I developed a relationship with him, and I knew his love. 00:23:05.210 then I visited my aunt, Emma. 00:23:32.805 --> 00:23:44.480 She told me about his life and his death, and she said that he decided not to see me because he was too ashamed of his behavior as a young these different communities who had never heard the name of Jesus. 00:27:04.810 --> 00:27:13.235 In today's world, evangelization is a little bit different because I think most people in our society to be part of his saving plan to heal, to allow them to experience the truth that they're loved, that they're worthy of belonging, that they have a purpose in this life, and that there is always hope. heard for many years that Catholics should have a missionary spirit and to go to the peripheries. 01:23:18.225 --> 01:23:23.365 But what does it mean for a Catholic professional to go to the periphery? 01:23:24.550 --> 01:23:28.570 What does it mean especially in the profession of psychology? 01:23:29.750 --> 01:23:32.650 Where are the peripheries in psychology? 01:23:33.510 --> 01:23:38.730 Until now, this question may have seemed to our graduates theoretical. 01:23:39.575 --> 01:23:48.795 But now and in the days ahead, it is a challenge that you will face in the day to day reality of your professional practice. 01:23:50.375 --> 01:24:01.510 During the next few minutes, I would like to suggest to you why it is that our graduates are uniquely qualified to make an historic contribution. 01:24:02.530 --> 01:24:05.910 In the nineteenth century, America was missionary territory. 01:24:06.610 --> 01:24:15.885 The history of Catholicism in The United States has been largely written by missionaries and those who had a missionary attitude. 01:24:16.745 --> 01:24:20.285 Men and women who were willing to go to the peripheries. 01:24:21.305 --> 01:24:24.720 And not just the geographical peripheries. 01:24:25.340 --> 01:24:27.440 Catholics in America needed sacraments. 01:24:28.140 --> 01:24:35.200 And they needed also those institutions that made possible a Catholic way of life. 01:24:35.825 --> 01:24:56.100 Catholics came together to form courageous, creative minorities, communities that built great churches and cathedrals, great schools and colleges and universities, orphanages and hospitals, and even fraternal brotherhoods like the Knights of Columbus. 01:24:57.040 --> 01:25:05.005 They built a network of institutions that Catholics needed to become who they were called to be. 01:25:06.025 --> 01:25:10.125 Again today, Catholic families need new institutions. 01:25:11.065 --> 01:25:15.565 Again today, Catholics need courageous missionaries. 01:25:16.320 --> 01:25:21.220 And again today, Catholics need creative minorities. 01:25:22.880 --> 01:25:31.780 Saint John Paul the second saw this very clearly, and that is why in 1981, he established the Pontifical Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. 01:25:32.295 --> 01:25:36.715 And several years later, he authorized its extension into The United States. 01:25:38.055 --> 01:25:50.270 Again, today, another creative initiative is Divine Mercy University, unique in the way it brings together theology and psychology. 01:25:51.290 --> 01:25:58.670 DMU is one of the most important initiatives in Catholic education in our time. 01:25:59.450 --> 01:26:04.055 DMU can influence the lives of millions of families. 01:26:05.235 --> 01:26:18.900 And as Bishop Burbage has suggested in his recent pastoral letter, by opening up the medical health mental health care profession to the healing presence of the divine physician. 01:26:20.240 --> 01:26:33.935 Next year will mark the one hundredth anniversary of Sigmund Freud's The Future of an Illusion, possibly the most influential book on the subject of religion in the twentieth century. 01:26:34.555 --> 01:26:49.270 In it, as many of you know, Freud described religion as, quote, the universal, obsessional neurosis of humanity that brings with it a quote disavowal of reality. 01:26:50.130 --> 01:26:57.270 Similar, he said, to quote, a state of blissful, hallucinatory confusion. 01:26:59.645 --> 01:27:03.745 Freud told the world that religion was an illusion. 01:27:04.445 --> 01:27:14.810 And he lamented the plight of those who since childhood had been administered what he called this bitter sweet poison. 01:27:16.390 --> 01:27:23.930 Freud did much to set the scientific foundation for modern atheism. 01:27:25.270 --> 01:27:41.155 Modern psychological practice may not explicitly endorse Freud's idea, but it just frequently proceeds on the basis that true science acts as though God does not exist. 01:27:42.780 --> 01:27:55.600 Or as Freud put it, quote, our science is no illusion, but an illusion it would be to suppose that what science cannot give us, we can get elsewhere. 01:27:57.725 --> 01:28:01.185 This has been the paradigm for much of the last century. 01:28:02.605 --> 01:28:11.345 But Christianity is not about projecting our ideas or creating an illusion to escape reality. 01:28:12.610 --> 01:28:19.830 Christianity is the recognition that God has revealed reality to us. 01:28:21.010 --> 01:28:29.245 First, by revealing to us who he is, and in so doing, revealing to us who we are. 01:28:30.905 --> 01:28:34.525 As pope John Paul the second told us, do not be afraid. 01:28:34.825 --> 01:28:38.410 Christ knows what is in man. 01:28:38.410 --> 01:28:40.670 He alone knows it. 01:28:41.450 --> 01:28:51.230 The decisive point here is that in Christianity, we find a vision of the human person illuminated by the love of Christ. 01:28:52.275 --> 01:29:01.735 And because love is present, mercy must follow, because the God who loves us is rich in mercy. 01:29:03.395 --> 01:29:08.620 Today, we need an approach to psychology that is free of illusion. 01:29:09.640 --> 01:29:22.005 We need Catholic therapists who will bring the whole truth about the human person in diagnosing mental disorders, conducting research, and practicing therapy. 01:29:22.005 --> 01:29:26.745 One extraordinary example of this is the work of Edith Stein. 01:29:28.005 --> 01:29:41.730 Stein proposed an alternative to Freud's model of id, ego, and superego by suggesting a new therapeutic model of soul, mind, and body. 01:29:42.670 --> 01:29:56.645 Her work in phenomenology, psychology, and spirituality is just one example, one example of the opportunities that exist today for Catholic mental health professionals. 01:29:59.025 --> 01:30:02.145 Obviously, many nuances are required here. 01:30:02.145 --> 01:30:10.360 Therapies and spiritual interventions must respect freedom, autonomy, and the religious and cultural diversity of patients. 01:30:10.820 --> 01:30:19.635 Yet, it is precisely here why Catholic inspired approaches to therapy are so necessary. 01:30:20.335 --> 01:30:41.840 Because they will enable a more culturally sensitive care for the millions of Christians who too often find their personal and their family culture disrespected by those who regard religious faith itself as some kind of mental illness. 01:30:43.740 --> 01:30:56.585 John Paul the second found in the Christ centered anthropology of the second Vatican council the key to understanding the human person and human action. 01:30:57.045 --> 01:31:02.260 According to him, the human person cannot live without love. 01:31:02.800 --> 01:31:08.820 Life is incomprehensible and senseless if we do not experience love. 01:31:09.120 --> 01:31:20.215 And so because of this, John Paul the second insisted that only a civilization of love is adequate to respect the dignity of each person. 01:31:21.235 --> 01:31:35.800 And he contrasted the civilization of love with what he called the civilization of technology, in which a technocratic logic and utilitarianism defines how we relate to each other. 01:31:36.740 --> 01:31:46.555 Now, you may have caught a glimpse of this logic in the unspoken assumptions of certain behaviorist and cognitive behavioral therapies. 01:31:48.295 --> 01:32:13.275 The greatest threat to human dignity today may not be found in the overt denials of human freedom, but in the more gradual tyranny, which treats the human person as a sort of product that can be shaped and manipulated by a variety of technological and chemical based therapies. 01:32:14.535 --> 01:32:29.540 Christian therapists, counselors, and clinical psychologists stand as sentinels today for a mental health care profession that is rapidly coming to a crossroads. 01:32:30.880 --> 01:32:37.060 At stake is nothing less than the dignity and integrity of the human person. 01:32:38.560 --> 01:32:44.665 And much will depend upon the witness of Catholic mental health care professionals. 01:32:46.805 --> 01:32:54.105 As I was preparing what I would say today, I came across something that Freud had asked a colleague in 1918. 01:32:56.390 --> 01:33:08.570 He questioned why it was that psychoanalysis had not been created by a religious believer, but instead had to be founded by an atheist. 01:33:10.105 --> 01:33:18.365 For decades, scholars have pondered Freud's question, and I certainly would not presume to offer an answer today. 01:33:19.225 --> 01:33:28.270 But I would suggest to you that we are now in the springtime of a Catholic moment in psychology. 01:33:29.610 --> 01:33:45.515 The degree to which this moment will be realized will depend upon the courage of DMU, its graduates, colleagues, and friends to be fully, faithfully, and distinctively Catholic. 01:33:46.950 --> 01:33:54.410 We are quite aware of what a psychotherapy looks like when God has study psychology and I they didn't know where I was studying yet, this one religious sister came up to me, a friend of mine, and she said, are you you're going to study psychology? 02:19:25.585 -->
