Please take this moment to silence any cell phones or other electronic devices.

00:00:58.490 --> 00:01:03.630
There will be a brief break between mass and the graduation ceremony.

00:01:04.410 --> 00:01:06.430
Bathrooms are located in the narthex.

00:01:08.330 --> 00:01:15.575
So that everyone is able to see their graduates entering, please remain seated during the academic procession.

00:01:16.355 --> 00:01:17.175
Thank you.

00:06:41.600 --> 00:06:47.700
Our opening hymn for mass is Let Us Go to the Altar of God, found in your program.

00:06:48.080 --> 00:06:49.220
Please rise.

00:09:01.990 --> 00:09:07.450
In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit.

00:09:07.990 --> 00:09:08.490
Amen.

00:09:08.870 --> 00:09:10.410
Peace be with you.

00:09:14.795 --> 00:09:19.455
My name is father Charles Sikorsky, and I'm the president of Divine Mercy University.

00:09:19.515 --> 00:09:30.690
And I would like to welcome you all, both here present and on our livestream, to the twenty third commencement mass and exercises for Divine Mercy University.

00:09:31.630 --> 00:09:39.890
And I'd like to thank our host, Father James Hudges, and his wonderful staff here at Saint Teresa's Parish in Aspen.

00:09:40.030 --> 00:09:45.915
And you've got this beautiful setting here in this church dedicated to the little flower.

00:09:46.935 --> 00:09:49.175
We have a lot to be grateful for today.

00:09:49.175 --> 00:09:54.555
We will have our largest graduating class, who will be 183 graduates.

00:09:55.495 --> 00:10:00.910
They come from 37 states in the District Of Columbia and eight different countries.

00:10:02.250 --> 00:10:09.370
We're blessed to have with us today Bishop Gregory Gordon as our main celebrant from the arch from the diocese archdiocese of Las Vegas.

00:10:09.370 --> 00:10:10.830
He's a Zoe Bishop there.

00:10:11.085 --> 00:10:18.785
We also have welcome Monsignor James Shea, who will be our honorary doctorate recipient, who is president of University of Mary.

00:10:19.245 --> 00:10:30.020
And we have father James Lauder, the national chaplain from folk John Lauder, from the national chaplain from FOCUS, who's with us today.

00:10:30.020 --> 00:10:34.520
And also 18 concelebrants, several of whom will be graduating.

00:10:35.380 --> 00:10:43.055
And then most of all, all those other graduates here, just a great day to celebrate each and every one of you.

00:10:43.275 --> 00:10:52.255
And there's no better way to give thanks to God than to celebrate the mass, and and ask for the strength in a sense of commencement.

00:10:52.395 --> 00:10:52.715
Right?

00:10:52.715 --> 00:11:07.670
That that God's grace be with us, be with each and every one of our graduates graduates as they commence this new stage of their life in bringing hope and healing and the presence of god to so many lives in need of his presence.

00:11:11.315 --> 00:11:19.175
To prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries, let us call to mind our sins.

00:11:26.410 --> 00:11:40.925
Lord Jesus, you come to reconcile us to one another and to the father.

00:11:43.705 --> 00:12:00.439
Kiriye lays on Christ Jesus, you heal the wounds of sin and evil.

00:12:00.439 --> 00:12:31.095
Christ Jesus, you heal the wounds with your father?

00:12:49.210 --> 00:12:56.750
May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

00:13:03.035 --> 00:13:04.415
Let us pray.

00:13:12.715 --> 00:13:25.670
O God, whose Son, at his ascension to the heavens, was pleased to promise the Holy Spirit to the apostles.

00:13:27.330 --> 00:13:52.970
Grant, we pray, that just as they received manifold gifts of heavenly teaching, so on us too, you may bestow spiritual gifts through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.

00:13:57.030 --> 00:13:57.530
Amen.

00:14:14.605 --> 00:14:16.705
A reading from the acts of the apostles.

00:14:18.610 --> 00:14:30.310
After staying in Antioch some time, Paul left and traveled in orderly sequence through the Galatian country and Phrygia, bringing strength to all the disciples.

00:14:31.985 --> 00:14:38.005
A Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, an eloquent speaker arrived in Ephesus.

00:14:39.185 --> 00:14:41.125
He was an authority on the scriptures.

00:14:42.545 --> 00:14:53.880
He had been instructed in the way of the Lord and with an ardent spirit spoke and taught accurately about Jesus, although he knew only the baptism of John.

00:14:55.140 --> 00:14:57.400
He began to speak boldly in the synagogue.

00:14:58.260 --> 00:15:05.365
But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

00:15:06.865 --> 00:15:14.405
And when he wanted to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him.

00:15:15.750 --> 00:15:21.930
After his arrival, he gave great assistance to those who had come to believe through grace.

00:15:23.030 --> 00:15:30.330
He vigorously refuted the Jews in public, establishing from the scriptures that the Christ is Jesus.

00:15:32.655 --> 00:15:33.795
The word of the lord.

00:15:34.335 --> 00:15:36.035
Thanks be to god.

00:16:13.520 --> 00:16:18.980
God is king of all the earth.

00:16:19.760 --> 00:16:25.140
God is king of all the earth.

00:16:43.420 --> 00:17:04.185
All you peoples, clap your hands Shout to God with cries of gladness For the Lord, the most tithing awesome, is the great king over all the earth.

00:17:07.125 --> 00:17:27.835
God For King of all the earth is God.

00:17:29.655 --> 00:17:33.035
Sing the hymns of praise.

00:17:35.095 --> 00:17:38.310
God rings over the nations.

00:17:38.390 --> 00:18:15.020
God Abraham.

00:18:29.910 --> 00:18:30.230
Supreme.

00:18:30.230 --> 00:18:35.930
God is king of all the earth.

00:18:37.270 --> 00:20:10.900
God is king of all I came from the Father and have come into the world Now I am the world And going back to the The Lord be with you.

00:20:10.900 --> 00:20:12.120
And with your spirit.

00:20:12.725 --> 00:20:16.345
A reading from the holy gospel according to John.

00:20:16.885 --> 00:20:18.825
Glory to you, oh Lord.

00:20:20.725 --> 00:20:30.600
Jesus said to his disciples, amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the father in my name, he will give you.

00:20:31.700 --> 00:20:35.640
Until now, you have not asked anything in my name.

00:20:36.580 --> 00:20:41.865
Ask and you will receive so that your joy may be complete.

00:20:43.365 --> 00:20:46.825
I have told you this in figures of speech.

00:20:47.765 --> 00:20:56.060
The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but I will tell you clearly about the father.

00:20:57.320 --> 00:21:15.645
On that day, you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the father for you, for the father himself loves you because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God.

00:21:16.745 --> 00:21:20.045
I came from the father and have come into the world.

00:21:20.825 --> 00:21:25.620
Now I am leaving the world and going back to the father.

00:21:28.000 --> 00:21:29.940
The gospel of the lord.

00:21:30.160 --> 00:21:33.220
Oh, praise to you lord Jesus Christ.

00:22:12.725 --> 00:22:31.210
Dear father, president Sikorsky, Monsignor Shea, fathers, Divine Mercy University faculty and administration, and dear graduates together with your family and your friends.

00:22:32.555 --> 00:22:52.230
It is a joy for me to be here with you today celebrating here at Saint Teresa Parish, the holy sacrifice of the mass, this baccalaureate mass with you and for you.

00:22:53.250 --> 00:23:04.665
My niece, Monica Gordon, is a member of Divine Mercy University's graduating class, and with you, members of Christ's body, the church.

00:23:06.805 --> 00:23:34.345
In these latter days of the Easter season, the church in a special way opens her heart as directed by the holy gospel and asks the Father in Christ's name for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

00:23:38.165 --> 00:23:57.100
The catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us the Spirit prepares men and goes out to them with His grace in order to draw them to Christ.

00:23:59.325 --> 00:24:12.890
The spirit manifests the risen Lord to them, recalls his words to them, and opens their minds to understanding his death and resurrection.

00:24:16.230 --> 00:24:36.295
He makes present the mystery of Christ supremely in the Eucharist in order to reconcile them, to bring them into communion with God that they may bear much fruit.

00:24:39.280 --> 00:25:09.690
The unique mission of Divine Mercy University grounded in an integrated Catholic view of the human person has helped prepare you graduates to go forth and bear much fruit, spiritual fruit, for your mission in the church and in the world.

00:25:11.750 --> 00:25:30.565
You have been well formed to harmonize psychological sciences with the truth and the wisdom of the Catholic and Christian vision of the human person.

00:25:31.505 --> 00:25:34.565
For that, we are most grateful.

00:25:35.590 --> 00:25:43.050
For that, we offer prayers of thanksgiving for you this graduation day.

00:25:45.350 --> 00:26:06.250
Such an integrated vision includes the gifts of God, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, except the form is Munare, enumerated by the prophet Isaiah.

00:26:08.070 --> 00:26:19.455
One gift in particular recalls the divine assistance that we have received in preparation for our mission, the gift of counsel.

00:26:23.035 --> 00:26:42.400
That blessed gift, counsel, renders us docile and receptive to the counsel of God regarding one's actions and in view of sanctification and in view of salvation.

00:26:44.935 --> 00:27:11.970
The gift of counsel enables a person to judge individual acts as good to be done, evil to be avoided, enlightening us to know what must be done in a particular time and place and circumstance, and enlightening us to counsel others who ask for direction.

00:27:16.695 --> 00:27:36.220
The gift of the Holy Spirit animates us to live the works of the Spirit, the spiritual works of mercy, including the spiritual work of counseling the doubtful.

00:27:37.480 --> 00:27:59.900
This work of mercy is illustrated throughout the New Testament, particularly in the epistles of Saint Paul in which each letter is aimed at counseling the doubt, giving sound wisdom and advice to Christians on the road to salvation.

00:28:01.400 --> 00:28:12.375
Is that not what we also hear, what we also heard today, this morning, in the Acts of the Apostles, the first reading of Holy Mass.

00:28:13.715 --> 00:28:25.500
Saint Paul departs Antioch and travels through Galatia and Phrygia, bringing strength to all the disciples.

00:28:26.200 --> 00:28:26.700
Strength.

00:28:28.280 --> 00:28:29.420
Spiritual counsel.

00:28:31.160 --> 00:28:32.060
Divine mercy.

00:28:35.095 --> 00:28:44.635
Priscilla and Aquila to Apollos, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

00:28:48.140 --> 00:28:54.160
Accurate explanation, spiritual counsel, divine mercy.

00:28:55.900 --> 00:29:04.935
And Apollos, upon his arrival in Achaia, gave great assistance to those who had come to believe through grace.

00:29:06.355 --> 00:29:16.530
Great assistance, spiritual counsel, all works of divine mercy.

00:29:18.750 --> 00:29:31.035
From the apostle Paul to Priscilla and Aquila, to Apollos, to you.

00:29:33.815 --> 00:29:49.690
Today, you go forth equipped to offer counsel, spiritual direction, and mental health care.

00:29:51.875 --> 00:30:08.590
In your mission, you allow the church to show forth more clearly the merciful hand of God to all the souls she will serve.

00:30:09.930 --> 00:30:13.310
May God bless you in this mission.

00:30:14.650 --> 00:30:19.870
A mission not always appreciated in our culture.

00:30:22.215 --> 00:30:27.755
A mission perhaps even opposed in some circles.

00:30:29.815 --> 00:30:34.795
May he give each of you the spirit's gift of fortitude.

00:30:37.980 --> 00:31:00.635
May the Blessed Virgin Mary, upon whom the Holy Spirit came, intercede for each of you that the love of God be poured into your hearts, the Holy Spirit given to us.

00:31:03.720 --> 00:31:18.965
Dear graduating class of Divine Mercy University, let us together confidently pray for divine mercy.

00:31:20.465 --> 00:31:31.800
Holy God, holy mighty one, holy immortal one, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

00:31:33.560 --> 00:31:37.340
In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit.

00:31:37.720 --> 00:31:38.220
Amen.

00:32:08.860 --> 00:32:11.520
Please rise for the prayer of the faithful.

00:32:43.175 --> 00:33:04.490
Filled with the joy of this Easter season and the Lord's continued presence with us, we bring to our Heavenly Father our prayers for the church, the world, Divine Mercy University, and those graduating today.

00:33:09.510 --> 00:33:19.905
For the universal church, may the power of Christ's resurrection convert us into convinced and joyful disciples of the risen Lord.

00:33:20.445 --> 00:33:21.985
We pray to the Lord.

00:33:22.285 --> 00:33:24.385
Lord, hear our prayer.

00:33:25.645 --> 00:33:44.745
For the holy father, Michael Burbage, our Bishop, and all the clergy, may the Paschal mystery continue to transform them into an image of Christ, empowering them to form the lay faithful into Christ's ardent disciples, we pray to the Lord.

00:33:45.045 --> 00:33:47.305
Lord, hear our prayer.

00:33:56.070 --> 00:34:11.395
For civil leaders and those who serve the needs of our countries and communities, may they follow just and merciful dictates of conscience, defending the lives of those entrusted to their care from the moment of conception until natural death.

00:34:12.015 --> 00:34:13.395
We pray to the Lord.

00:34:13.855 --> 00:34:15.715
Lord, hear our prayer.

00:34:17.215 --> 00:34:30.770
For those who suffer mentally and spiritually, brought on by abuse, trauma, or mental illness, May they be supported by their family and friends and attain healing through compassionate professional care.

00:34:31.870 --> 00:34:33.170
We pray to the Lord.

00:34:33.470 --> 00:34:35.570
Lord, hear our prayer.

00:34:42.325 --> 00:34:50.585
For the graduates of Divine Mercy University, may the Lord accompany each one as we serve those in need of healing and hope.

00:34:51.230 --> 00:34:52.530
We pray to the Lord.

00:34:52.830 --> 00:34:54.850
Lord, hear our prayer.

00:34:55.230 --> 00:35:05.570
That all of us present here today and each graduate or family member not in attendance will ardently seek a personal relationship with Christ and his church.

00:35:06.165 --> 00:35:07.385
We pray to the Lord.

00:35:07.925 --> 00:35:09.945
Lord, hear our prayer.

00:35:19.970 --> 00:35:24.550
Let us pray for those loved ones who have died during the past year.

00:35:25.090 --> 00:35:35.375
May the lord graciously accept the deceased into his kingdom and continue to comfort those still struggling with the loss of a family member or friend.

00:35:35.835 --> 00:35:37.375
We pray to the lord.

00:35:37.595 --> 00:35:39.535
Lord, hear our prayer.

00:35:40.395 --> 00:35:59.910
For the faculty, staff, students, and supporters of Divine Mercy University, may they be blessed in their mission to serve the dignity of each human person created in god's image through the science of psychology, the wisdom of theology, and the profession of counseling.

00:36:00.675 --> 00:36:02.135
We pray to the lord.

00:36:02.435 --> 00:36:04.695
Lord, hear our prayer.

00:36:06.275 --> 00:36:13.655
Almighty father, your beloved son has risen from the dead as he promised us.

00:36:14.490 --> 00:36:26.590
With confidence and joy, we present our prayers to you through the same risen Lord who lives and reigns forever and ever.

00:36:27.050 --> 00:36:27.550
Amen.

00:36:30.625 --> 00:37:50.895
I'm sorry, in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

00:37:54.475 --> 00:44:08.695
Lord of all Graciously sanctify these gifts, oh Lord, we pray, and accepting the oblation of this spiritual sacrifice, us an eternal offering to you through Christ our Lord.

00:44:37.335 --> 00:44:39.115
The Lord be with you.

00:44:42.855 --> 00:44:45.435
Lift up your all hearts.

00:44:50.730 --> 00:44:54.350
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

00:45:00.645 --> 00:45:18.800
It is truly right and just our duty and our salvation at all times to acclaim you, oh lord, but in this time above all to laud you yet more gloriously when Christ our Passover has been sacrificed.

00:45:20.860 --> 00:45:25.840
For he is the true lamb who has taken away the sins of the world.

00:45:27.195 --> 00:45:35.215
By dying, he has destroyed our death and by rising, restored our life.

00:45:36.475 --> 00:45:46.610
Therefore, overcome with Paschal joy, Every land, every people exalts in your praise.

00:45:47.950 --> 00:45:59.775
And even the heavenly powers with the angelic hosts Sing together the unending hymn of your glory as they acclaim.

00:46:06.475 --> 00:47:42.340

00:47:52.815 --> 00:47:59.070
For them, we offer you the sacrifice of praise, while they offer it for themselves and all who are dear to them.

00:47:59.390 --> 00:48:07.810
For the redemption of their souls and hope of health and well-being, and paying their homage to you, the eternal God, living and true.

00:49:22.220 --> 00:49:27.120
Be pleased, oh god, we pray, to bless, acknowledge, and approve this offering in every respect.

00:49:27.580 --> 00:49:35.835
Make it spiritual and acceptable so that it may become for us the body and blood of your most beloved son, our lord Jesus Christ.

00:49:36.455 --> 00:49:41.355
On the day before he was to suffer, he took bread in his holy and venerable hands.

00:49:41.655 --> 00:49:59.270
And with eyes raised to heaven to you, oh God, his almighty father, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples saying, take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you.

00:50:14.715 --> 00:50:29.310
In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took this precious chalice in his holy and venerable hands, and once more giving you thanks, he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying, take this all of you and drink from it.

00:50:29.465 --> 00:50:37.965
For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

00:50:38.505 --> 00:50:40.845
Do this in memory of me.

00:50:56.415 --> 00:50:59.395
The mystery of faith.

00:51:05.695 --> 00:51:49.240
We proclaim your death, O Lord, Therefore, oh lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the blessed passion, the resurrection from the dead, and the glorious ascension into heaven of Christ, your son, our lord, we your servants and your holy people offer to your glorious majesty from the gifts that you have given us, this pure victim, this holy victim, this spotless victim, the holy bread of eternal life, and the chalice of everlasting salvation.

00:51:50.015 --> 00:52:07.370
Be pleased to look upon these offerings with a serene and kindly countenance and to accept them as once you are pleased to accept the gifts of your servant Abel the Just, the sacrifice of Abraham our father in faith, and the offering of your high priest Melchizedek, a holy sacrifice, a spotless victim.

00:52:07.990 --> 00:52:27.185
In humble prayer, we ask you almighty god, command that these gifts be born by the hands of your holy angel to your altar on high in the sight of your divine majesty so that all of us who through this participation at the altar receive the most holy body and blood of your son may be filled with every grace and heavenly blessing.

00:52:31.005 --> 00:52:40.190
Remember also, lord, your servants who have fallen before us with the sign of faith and rest in the sleep peace.

00:52:40.190 --> 00:52:41.150
Grant them all over.

00:52:41.150 --> 00:52:45.330
We craft an awesome sleep in Christ, a place of refreshment, light, and peace.

00:52:49.085 --> 00:53:26.545
To us also your servants who know sin, hope in your abundant mercies, gracious and grant some share and fellowship with your only apostles and martyrs, with John the Baptist, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius, Alexander, Through whom you continue to make all these good things, oh lord, you sanctify them, fill them with life, bless them, and bestow them upon us.

00:53:30.120 --> 00:53:47.415
Through Him and with Him and in Him, O God, Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.

00:54:17.405 --> 00:54:32.150
At the savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

00:54:33.250 --> 00:54:41.910
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

00:54:43.755 --> 00:54:58.970
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

00:55:00.070 --> 00:55:09.370
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

00:55:11.725 --> 00:55:14.845
Deliver us Lord, we pray from every evil.

00:55:14.845 --> 00:55:31.340
Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior, Jesus Christ.

00:55:32.840 --> 00:55:41.545
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever.

00:55:45.365 --> 00:55:50.585
Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you.

00:55:50.885 --> 00:56:02.870
Look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever.

00:56:03.170 --> 00:56:03.670
Amen.

00:56:03.890 --> 00:56:06.390
The peace of the Lord be with you always.

00:56:08.245 --> 00:56:08.533
And with your spirit.

00:56:08.533 --> 00:56:10.905
Let us offer to one another a sign of Christ peace.

00:56:57.000 --> 00:58:57.660
Lamb of God, you take Behold the lamb of God.

00:58:58.200 --> 00:59:01.835
Behold who takes away the sins of the world.

00:59:02.535 --> 00:59:06.155
Blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb.

00:59:50.160 --> 00:59:51.300
The body of grace.

00:59:52.640 --> 00:59:54.030
The body of grace.

01:12:55.080 --> 01:12:56.300
Let us pray.

01:13:09.335 --> 01:13:20.760
We have partaken of the gifts of this sacred mystery, son commanded us to do in memory of him.

01:13:20.900 --> 01:13:27.000
They bring us growth in charity through Christ our Lord.

01:13:34.805 --> 01:13:34.965
Amen.

01:13:34.965 --> 01:13:43.465
Before the final blessing of this mass, I just wish to convey blessings that were asked, to be shared.

01:13:44.220 --> 01:13:49.840
Bishop Michael Burbage, your ordinary is celebrating the sacrament of confirmation, this morning.

01:13:50.060 --> 01:13:54.800
But he asked to extend to all of you his prayers and his blessings.

01:13:55.420 --> 01:14:05.535
Also, one of your alumni, Bishop Keith Chielinski, asked me to share his prayers and blessings with all of you as well.

01:14:05.915 --> 01:14:13.230
And now I can part, the blessing after which we will return to the church for the commencement exercises.

01:14:26.510 --> 01:14:30.425
Blessed be the name of the Lord, now and forever.

01:14:32.485 --> 01:14:37.385
Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.

01:14:38.085 --> 01:14:44.500
And may almighty God bless you, the father, the son, and the holy spirit.

01:14:49.520 --> 01:14:52.180
Go forth, the mass is ended.

01:14:53.920 --> 01:14:56.455
Thanks be to God.

01:18:35.510 --> 01:18:42.485
The twenty twenty four commencement exercises of Divine Mercy University are now in order.

01:18:43.105 --> 01:18:44.245
Please be seated.

01:18:48.625 --> 01:18:49.445
Good afternoon.

01:18:50.545 --> 01:18:59.630
My name is doctor Steven Grondman, professor in the Institute for the Psychological Sciences at Divine Mercy University.

01:19:00.650 --> 01:19:10.665
I have the great honor to serve today as marshal of Divine Mercy University's twenty third commencement exercises.

01:19:12.325 --> 01:19:22.345
To begin this momentous event, I have the great pleasure of introducing the third president of Divine Mercy University, father Charles Sikorsky.

01:19:25.600 --> 01:19:41.395
Elected in 2007, father Charles has led the Institute for the Psychological Sciences, now Divine Mercy University, through significant growth and important milestones of our institutional history.

01:19:42.415 --> 01:19:53.750
We are grateful to you, father Charles, for your faithful service and dedication to this important and necessary mission these past eighteen years.

01:19:53.750 --> 01:19:57.530
Father Charles, I invite you to come forward for opening remarks.

01:20:10.635 --> 01:20:26.750
Bishop Gordon, Monsignor Shea, our dear graduates, members of their families, their friends, and all present here, and all those who are present on the livestream, welcome to the twenty third commencement exercises for Divine Mercy University.

01:20:28.170 --> 01:20:45.995
On behalf of our board of directors, the faculty, the staff, benefactors, and many friends of Divine Mercy University, I welcome you once again to this joyous event, and I congratulate our graduates for a job well done.

01:20:47.690 --> 01:21:04.175
Today, you, our graduates, joining the celebration that honors your hard work, your gifts, your sacrifices, as well as a providential providential mission that you've chosen to be a part of.

01:21:04.175 --> 01:21:11.555
Above all, it's a pivot point in God's loving plan and call to mission to each of your lives.

01:21:13.040 --> 01:21:20.260
As we celebrate today, 182 graduates who hail from various countries in many different states.

01:21:20.880 --> 01:21:29.625
And actually, yesterday, we actually had a an engagement, two students who are graduating today from counseling, met at one of the residencies.

01:21:36.565 --> 01:21:39.385
And, the proposal was made in our small chapel.

01:21:39.540 --> 01:21:41.540
It's a shame the new one wasn't ready yet.

01:21:41.540 --> 01:21:45.480
But anyway, congratulations to them, and we show them of our prayers.

01:21:48.820 --> 01:21:59.245
So there can be no doubt that your the individual collective and impact each of you will have on your communities in the nation, the world you're entering.

01:22:00.505 --> 01:22:14.160
Saint John Paul the second once said in an address to the members of the American Psychiatric Association the following quote, by its very nature, your work often brings you to the threshold of human mystery.

01:22:14.940 --> 01:22:25.135
It involves sensitivity to the tangled workings of the human mind and heart and openness to the ultimate concerns that give meaning to people's lives.

01:22:25.995 --> 01:22:29.775
These are areas of utmost utmost importance to the church.

01:22:32.075 --> 01:22:33.695
You're an answer to many prayers.

01:22:34.620 --> 01:22:51.845
In a world in such need of hope, in a world in need of healthy relationships, in a world in need of healing and unity, in a world in need of a truly human, of truly human and godly values, each one of you is an answer to a prayer.

01:22:52.705 --> 01:22:57.205
An answer to the prayers of many people in search of hope, who you will serve.

01:22:57.905 --> 01:23:01.045
An answer to the prayers of their families and loved ones.

01:23:01.585 --> 01:23:11.850
An answer to the prayers of the church and people of faith, an answer to the prayers of so many people of goodwill in our communities and civic institutions.

01:23:13.990 --> 01:23:20.285
The hard work, sacrifice, and generosity that brought you to this point is worthy of great praise and celebration.

01:23:22.185 --> 01:23:32.525
It is indeed edifying to see how you've responded to God's invitation to be servants in what Pope Francis has called the field hospital that the church is called to serve.

01:23:33.520 --> 01:23:40.500
And you've given yourselves to this mission during your years of education for the good of others, both now and in the future.

01:23:42.080 --> 01:23:46.740
May our loving father, who has begun this good work in you, bring it to fulfillment.

01:23:47.795 --> 01:23:52.695
May his kingdom come through you on earth as it is in heaven.

01:23:53.315 --> 01:23:54.775
May God bless you all.

01:24:03.440 --> 01:24:15.780
So as we gather today to celebrate the academic achievements of our graduating students, it's also a momentous occasion to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of our esteemed faculty members.

01:24:16.535 --> 01:24:26.315
Throughout the academic year, our faculty members have tirelessly dedicated themselves to the pursuit of knowledge, teaching excellence, and scholarly endeavors.

01:24:27.495 --> 01:24:39.060
It's with great pride today that we announce the promotion of doctor Matthew McVorter, who has attained the rank of associate professor in the masters of science in counseling program.

01:24:40.320 --> 01:24:49.685
As we applaud his accomplishments, let us all express our deepest gratitude for his continued commitment to excellence and his invaluable contributions to the mission of the university.

01:24:50.385 --> 01:24:55.925
Please join me in congratulating doctor McVorder on his well deserved advancements in rank.

01:25:07.210 --> 01:25:17.735
Secondly, after twenty years of dedicated service to our university, doctor Philip Scrofani has reached the well deserved occasion of retirement from teaching.

01:25:18.835 --> 01:25:26.215
Throughout his tenure, he's embodied a spirit of academic excellence, exceptional wisdom, and heroic fidelity to God's plan.

01:25:27.210 --> 01:25:35.470
Inspiring countless students and colleagues alike with his passion for learning and unwavering commitment to scholarship and truth.

01:25:36.970 --> 01:25:51.125
Doctor Scrofani has left an indelible legacy on our campus, not only through his outstanding contributions to teaching and research, but also through his mentorship, leadership, and profound impact on the lives of those he has touched.

01:25:52.065 --> 01:26:06.100
On behalf of the entire university community, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to doctor Scafani for his years of dedicated service, prudent leadership, and fidelity to God's plan and the mission of DMU.

01:26:07.245 --> 01:26:15.185
We're immensely grateful for the countless ways in which he has enriched our community and shaped the minds and futures of our students.

01:26:17.005 --> 01:26:25.530
As doctor Scrofoni embarks on this new chapter in his life, we wish him and his wife Susan health, happiness, and fulfillment in all their future endeavors.

01:26:26.310 --> 01:26:38.725
Please join me in extending our warmest congratulations and best wishes along with prayers of thanksgiving to doctor Scrofani on his well deserved retirement and a mission graciously and fruitfully accomplished.

01:27:04.935 --> 01:27:10.075
Doctor Scranton would like to share some words of his great wisdom, to us.

01:27:18.080 --> 01:27:20.900
Thank you very much, father Charles.

01:27:22.400 --> 01:27:38.905
Monsignor Shea, father Charles, our president, families of the graduates of 2024, my own family who's here today, and most of all, the graduates of 2024.

01:27:38.905 --> 01:27:53.460
Today, I have the distinct honor of saying a few words at the wonderful occasion of your commencement and also the occasion of my retirement after fifty two years as a clinical psychologist.

01:27:54.000 --> 01:27:57.140
The best of the years were the last twenty here at DMU.

01:27:59.120 --> 01:28:03.455
Commencements are about the beginning of something, The beginning of your careers.

01:28:04.075 --> 01:28:06.495
Retirements are about the ending of a career.

01:28:07.435 --> 01:28:09.775
Something begins, something ends.

01:28:11.035 --> 01:28:14.875
But if you look at it, they're actually two sides of the same coin.

01:28:14.875 --> 01:28:23.020
Every beginning implies that something else is ending, and every ending means that there's something new yet to come.

01:28:24.280 --> 01:28:28.460
As Christians, we see the world as a series of commencements.

01:28:30.245 --> 01:28:37.865
And even at the end of life, there's still a gray and grand commencement yet to come to spend eternity with the Lord.

01:28:38.725 --> 01:28:41.145
What a beautiful way to see the world.

01:28:42.420 --> 01:28:53.480
I, today, would like a few minutes, maybe a few more than just a few minutes, to say some things, that I hope would be memorable to you.

01:28:55.085 --> 01:29:02.945
I would like to reverse the formula and talk about some of my own beginnings and how I got to where I am as I stand here today.

01:29:04.285 --> 01:29:08.385
And, hopefully plant some seeds for your commencement.

01:29:09.870 --> 01:29:12.050
So if you'll please bear with me.

01:29:12.830 --> 01:29:17.730
I was born in nineteen forties at the beginning of the World War two.

01:29:19.790 --> 01:29:21.490
It was a dark time in history.

01:29:21.870 --> 01:29:23.490
The world was at war.

01:29:24.855 --> 01:29:27.095
People wouldn't be sure how that would come out.

01:29:27.095 --> 01:29:32.555
My parents had been immigrants from Southern Italy, a very poor part of Italy.

01:29:34.135 --> 01:29:37.675
They came with, just a few years of education.

01:29:38.070 --> 01:29:41.050
They only had about three years of elementary school education.

01:29:41.270 --> 01:29:47.610
And in those days, it was the custom to pull young people out of school and start them in the trades.

01:29:47.910 --> 01:29:51.785
So even as a child, my mother was began as a seamstress.

01:29:52.165 --> 01:29:54.345
My dad is a cobbler.

01:29:54.965 --> 01:29:56.725
And then they came through Ellis Island.

01:29:56.725 --> 01:29:58.565
Everyone knows stories like that.

01:29:58.565 --> 01:30:00.905
And they worked in the heavy industries in America.

01:30:01.365 --> 01:30:07.480
And they settled in the middle of a large city, which in those days was referred to as a little Italy.

01:30:07.940 --> 01:30:15.000
We lived in a basement apartment next to these huge furnaces that heated the whole apartment.

01:30:15.460 --> 01:30:19.320
And they have very give very little to give us as you might imagine.

01:30:20.275 --> 01:30:23.815
But the one thing that they could give us of great value was our faith.

01:30:24.355 --> 01:30:35.550
They had a fervent belief that if we carried our faith with us, then anything in our lives, the good times but also the hard times, would somehow make sense.

01:30:35.610 --> 01:30:36.670
And they were right.

01:30:36.890 --> 01:30:38.750
That was a great way to get launched.

01:30:39.130 --> 01:30:47.770
Somehow, they they found the means to send us to this little Catholic school at the edge of the inner city in those days.

01:30:47.770 --> 01:30:50.515
The whole city was divided up into fiefdoms.

01:30:50.515 --> 01:30:59.255
There's Italians and Irish people and African American people and Jewish people and Portuguese people, everything you can think of.

01:30:59.715 --> 01:31:08.010
And they all went to work at the end of the day together, even though they lived in separate sectors, doing what we would call today the menial jobs.

01:31:09.110 --> 01:31:17.655
And at this Catholic school, these these offsprings of these very poor people got the very, very best education that money could buy.

01:31:17.655 --> 01:31:35.270
We had this order of young nuns that were, of Irish descent, actually, teaching these young Italian kids and Irish kids and African American kids really the best of elementary school education you could imagine in that place in that time.

01:31:36.290 --> 01:31:41.670
And we also had young priests coming back from World War two who had been chaplains and seen a great deal.

01:31:42.445 --> 01:31:43.985
And so it was a phenomena.

01:31:44.045 --> 01:31:48.045
It was something I'm not sure exists anywhere in the world today.

01:31:48.045 --> 01:31:49.585
But to us, it was a godsend.

01:31:49.725 --> 01:31:59.820
And the proof of that was that through the kindness and the encouragement of these young nuns, many of us wound up in universities.

01:32:00.760 --> 01:32:07.240
Now if you were an inner city kid, the best you could do was go to a university that was local and you could day hop to.

01:32:07.240 --> 01:32:13.365
It would take us, oh, about an hour and a half on city buses to go way out into the suburbs.

01:32:13.665 --> 01:32:15.925
I went to a place called Seton Hall University.

01:32:16.865 --> 01:32:22.565
And in those days, the universities, the Catholic universities were top universities.

01:32:22.785 --> 01:32:26.165
They were hard to get into and difficult to get through.

01:32:27.000 --> 01:32:32.380
And you had to minor in philosophy and theology besides your major.

01:32:32.520 --> 01:32:36.540
So that the end of my fourth year, I was a Thomist.

01:32:37.400 --> 01:32:43.945
I saw the world with the end lenses of Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas Aquinas.

01:32:44.245 --> 01:32:52.985
And that was important then because we had seen the darkness of the world and their way of seeing the world brought light and it brought hope.

01:32:53.605 --> 01:33:05.320
And the way they saw the human person brought the greatest amount of hope that every person, no matter their circumstances, was made in the image and likeness of God.

01:33:06.420 --> 01:33:10.360
And so that's who we were and that's what our lens was.

01:33:11.895 --> 01:33:16.315
My big problem in those days was finding the tuition to get through school.

01:33:17.095 --> 01:33:23.115
It may not seem much to anyone today, but it was about $1,000 a year to get through university.

01:33:24.375 --> 01:33:31.710
And my parents combined, earnings was about 3,000 a year.

01:33:31.710 --> 01:33:34.450
So there was no way they could help us very much.

01:33:34.670 --> 01:33:42.015
So at the end of my first year, I had saved enough money to finish call, my first year of college, but I was completely out of money.

01:33:42.315 --> 01:33:48.575
And the best you could do in those days was get kind of a heavy labor job, manual labor.

01:33:49.035 --> 01:34:05.330
And my other five friends who were at university with me all got hired, but they wouldn't hire me for obvious reasons why in manual labor would you hire a person without two fully developed hands when they you could hire someone with two hands.

01:34:05.885 --> 01:34:07.825
So there I was and I was stuck.

01:34:08.525 --> 01:34:09.405
How would I go on?

01:34:09.405 --> 01:34:11.185
How could I possibly go on?

01:34:11.805 --> 01:34:15.645
And I remember sitting in front of my house, kind of puzzling this out.

01:34:15.645 --> 01:34:18.765
I wasn't bitter because that's just the way life was.

01:34:18.765 --> 01:34:21.345
There was no such thing as entitlement in those days.

01:34:21.850 --> 01:34:23.230
Rather, there was gratitude.

01:34:23.290 --> 01:34:24.990
You were glad if you got anything.

01:34:25.690 --> 01:34:31.290
And I was puzzling and kind of discouraged, and along came a man that I had barely known.

01:34:31.290 --> 01:34:35.710
He lived at the end of our block, and his name was Saladin Porti.

01:34:36.765 --> 01:34:43.085
And he stopped in front of me and he said, hey Phil, I hear you finished your first year at university.

01:34:43.085 --> 01:34:44.785
And I said, yeah, I did very well.

01:34:45.325 --> 01:34:47.165
He said, well, are you going on?

01:34:47.165 --> 01:34:48.285
I said, I think not.

01:34:48.285 --> 01:34:50.225
I just can't seem to find a job.

01:34:50.670 --> 01:34:51.470
And he said, really?

01:34:51.470 --> 01:34:57.570
And he mentioned all the establishments that had turned me down and I just kind of blew it off and said they were all filled.

01:34:58.430 --> 01:35:03.170
He walked him out 15 more steps and then he turned around.

01:35:04.445 --> 01:35:06.685
And people were very frank in those days.

01:35:06.685 --> 01:35:09.265
There there was no such thing as, microaggressions.

01:35:09.965 --> 01:35:11.585
You said what was on your mind.

01:35:11.805 --> 01:35:13.665
And he said, let me ask you something.

01:35:14.445 --> 01:35:18.625
Do you think you can unload steel off the back of trucks with that hand of yours?

01:35:21.170 --> 01:35:22.230
I always said I could.

01:35:25.250 --> 01:35:26.550
Excuse me.

01:35:27.330 --> 01:35:30.070
And, he took me out.

01:35:30.930 --> 01:35:31.590
I'm sorry.

01:35:31.730 --> 01:35:33.030
Didn't expect this.

01:35:33.195 --> 01:35:45.215
He took me out to, a place called Otis Elevator Factory, and he said, we're allowed to bring each bring a son or a daughter to do the heavy lifting because the old timers don't like to unload the trucks.

01:35:46.000 --> 01:35:52.960
And he put me to work, and for the first time in my life, I was working harder than I could ever work unloading steel off the back of trucks.

01:35:52.960 --> 01:36:00.180
I couldn't have been happier because, he did that every summer until I finally graduated.

01:36:01.665 --> 01:36:03.045
So think about that.

01:36:04.065 --> 01:36:07.685
Parents, they give you far more than they ever dreamed of for themselves.

01:36:09.985 --> 01:36:22.410
Nuns who gave you the highest education you could imagine, asking very little in return, and a random guy who passes by one day and gives you what you need for a college education.

01:36:22.950 --> 01:36:28.250
And suddenly, it came alive to me what Saint Thomas was talking about.

01:36:28.855 --> 01:36:36.635
That was that goodness that was buried inside of people that wasn't some abstract philosophical idea.

01:36:36.855 --> 01:36:41.515
It was something that was manifested in the action of people.

01:36:41.860 --> 01:36:45.960
A goodness that came out randomly that was often overlooked.

01:36:46.420 --> 01:36:57.000
We all see so many bad things that are publicized about people, and sometimes we just pass by these simple good things that we do for one another.

01:36:58.355 --> 01:36:59.495
That's that philosophy.

01:37:01.155 --> 01:37:09.395
Well, at the end of my college career, I thought it was going to law school, but Sal Gampordi had moved on, and there was no way I could afford law school.

01:37:09.395 --> 01:37:19.420
So I saw a bulletin, and it was an advertisement for young college students to work in an inpatient unit for adolescent psychiatric patients.

01:37:20.040 --> 01:37:23.900
And I didn't know much about psychology, but I knew I could do that standing on my head.

01:37:23.960 --> 01:37:31.465
So I went out there and in three years I mean, three weeks, I should say, I had found my calling.

01:37:31.465 --> 01:37:33.065
This is something I could do.

01:37:33.065 --> 01:37:41.400
And fortunately, in those days, they needed graduate students in psychology, so you could get assistantships and traineeships and so forth.

01:37:41.400 --> 01:37:45.580
And I managed now to get into the science of psychology.

01:37:46.520 --> 01:37:47.820
So let me go on.

01:37:48.520 --> 01:37:57.185
In psychology, I suddenly was taught by these more secularized professors that philosophy and theology was a thing of the past.

01:37:57.185 --> 01:37:58.725
That was medieval thinking.

01:37:59.265 --> 01:38:02.225
Now you are going to introduced into the world of science.

01:38:02.225 --> 01:38:04.645
Well, psychology is a wonderful science.

01:38:04.865 --> 01:38:11.840
It opens up a whole new epistemology for you and many, many ways to help people as you well know.

01:38:12.860 --> 01:38:18.140
And so I kind of lost for a while my vision of a Thomistic view of the world.

01:38:18.140 --> 01:38:21.100
And I now looked at an empirical view of the world.

01:38:21.100 --> 01:38:25.600
That all held up until my last year, and then something happened.

01:38:26.275 --> 01:38:30.695
My last year, I was looking for my final intern externship.

01:38:30.995 --> 01:38:32.855
Sound familiar to most of you?

01:38:32.995 --> 01:38:41.870
In those days, it was a buyer's market, so the externship you got became the the internship you eventually get.

01:38:41.870 --> 01:38:55.755
And I had looked down there on this long list and I had a lot of attractive offers, but the last and considered the least attractive offer was a place right here in Washington called Saint Elizabeth's Hospital.

01:38:55.755 --> 01:38:57.455
Some of you may have heard of it.

01:38:57.915 --> 01:39:01.215
And it was once the most famous hospital in the country.

01:39:01.355 --> 01:39:03.215
It was started in the eighteen fifties.

01:39:03.915 --> 01:39:10.130
It had a year a hundred years of success and innovation and discovery.

01:39:10.350 --> 01:39:15.650
But in the nineteen fifties, it became neglected and fell in disrepair.

01:39:15.790 --> 01:39:22.605
But then there was the war on poverty and they poured all of this money into these underserved areas.

01:39:22.665 --> 01:39:25.725
And they kind of resurrected this enormous campus.

01:39:26.345 --> 01:39:30.045
It was larger than most universities that you could find.

01:39:30.745 --> 01:39:39.620
And suddenly, once again, it had these beautiful lawns and flower beds and fruit trees and berry bushes, everything you could imagine.

01:39:39.760 --> 01:39:44.880
But when I stepped on the campus to take the interview, I kind of had the shock of my life.

01:39:44.880 --> 01:39:56.405
I looked around and I saw some of the most psychotic, most confused, most forlorn, and seemingly unwanted people on the face of the earth.

01:39:56.405 --> 01:39:58.885
They were wandering around on these grounds.

01:39:58.885 --> 01:40:03.045
And I remember being shocked at first, but I also kind of felt touched.

01:40:03.045 --> 01:40:10.600
I had been thinking of going into the Peace Corps to give all of the good fortune that I had had in my life to give it back in some way.

01:40:10.600 --> 01:40:16.140
But when I saw these people, something told me maybe the Peace Corps is right here.

01:40:16.280 --> 01:40:18.620
Maybe something is needed right here.

01:40:18.680 --> 01:40:19.500
So I stayed.

01:40:22.425 --> 01:40:23.405
It was a blessing.

01:40:23.865 --> 01:40:31.165
And my internship, I, like most interns, it was one of the largest internships in the country at the time.

01:40:32.025 --> 01:40:41.920
Most interns would pursue the high functioning patients, The ones that were poor were easy to treat, and so you could apply your method, apply your craft, and see results.

01:40:42.540 --> 01:40:43.600
And I did that.

01:40:44.540 --> 01:40:50.400
But then what about these other people that were wandering around that didn't seem to get much care at all?

01:40:50.585 --> 01:40:54.605
And I remember talking to some of the seasoned psychiatrists and they said, well, they're untreatable.

01:40:55.305 --> 01:40:56.525
They have no insight.

01:40:56.745 --> 01:40:58.925
You can't do psychotherapy with them.

01:40:59.865 --> 01:41:09.210
And that's when I realized for the first time that this wonderful discipline of clinical psychology was also quite incomplete.

01:41:09.510 --> 01:41:10.890
There was something missing.

01:41:11.510 --> 01:41:23.365
And the thing that was missing was what Saint Thomas was talking about, that in every one of these human beings, there was a core of goodness and dignity that could not be eradicated.

01:41:24.065 --> 01:41:27.205
And I felt all you had to do is find it.

01:41:28.065 --> 01:41:35.400
Well, I'll tell you one quick illustration, and then I won't throw on to throw on for too much longer.

01:41:36.900 --> 01:41:41.140
I would see during the day the high functioning patients so I could learn.

01:41:41.140 --> 01:41:47.000
And then in the evening, I got permission to sit with some of these so called chronic people.

01:41:47.705 --> 01:41:53.465
And sometimes something would happen, but sometimes you'd see something that kind of surprised you.

01:41:53.465 --> 01:41:56.365
It was one person, let's just call him Nick.

01:41:56.505 --> 01:42:06.440
It was a floridly psychotic young man, excuse me, who could barely make a coherent sentence.

01:42:06.440 --> 01:42:07.660
He's very anxious.

01:42:08.360 --> 01:42:10.460
He squirmed in his chair.

01:42:10.680 --> 01:42:11.660
He was hallucinating.

01:42:13.320 --> 01:42:15.820
And but I sat with him patiently.

01:42:16.440 --> 01:42:22.195
And one day, I was walking through cross this beautiful campus and he did something to quote my eye.

01:42:22.575 --> 01:42:31.875
He had a container and he was going around to the fruit trees and the berry bushes and picking the berries and fruits and putting it in this container.

01:42:33.490 --> 01:42:36.070
And then he got a hose and he washed them all off.

01:42:36.210 --> 01:42:40.870
And then he picked some flowers out of the flower bed, which you weren't supposed to do, but he did anyway.

01:42:41.010 --> 01:42:42.550
And he put them in his container.

01:42:43.730 --> 01:42:50.605
And of all the 27 buildings that he could have chose, he goes to the most forgotten building on the campus.

01:42:51.065 --> 01:42:58.925
And it was a little cottage for elderly women, very poor and quite demented, that were warehoused in this cottage.

01:42:59.570 --> 01:43:07.270
And on a nice day, they would sit them out in the front to get some air and just leave them there vegetating, not doing very much.

01:43:07.810 --> 01:43:14.455
And he took his container with the flowers and the fruit, and he gave it to these women, and they would light up.

01:43:14.995 --> 01:43:16.375
And then he walked away.

01:43:16.915 --> 01:43:19.895
And I remember seeing that and saying, fancy that.

01:43:20.595 --> 01:43:22.855
Never imagined that he would ever do that.

01:43:23.075 --> 01:43:29.830
Several times later, I was passing by and a woman had fallen from that cottage again.

01:43:30.210 --> 01:43:34.550
And I started started over there, of course, people didn't notice that she had fallen.

01:43:34.610 --> 01:43:44.615
And he sort of beat me to the punch and he picks this woman up as gently as you would pick up your own grandmother, and he escorts her into this cottage.

01:43:45.315 --> 01:43:48.535
And then he talks to the nurse, tells her what happens, and he leaves.

01:43:49.955 --> 01:43:51.335
And I went, wow.

01:43:52.380 --> 01:44:02.320
So that night when I saw him after seeing all of my other patients, I pushed all of my incomplete psychology, so to speak aside, and said, let me just meet him where he's at.

01:44:03.020 --> 01:44:14.145
And I just looked at him and I said one thing, today I saw you pick up that woman and very kindly bring her into the cottage and I stopped.

01:44:15.005 --> 01:44:17.905
And for the first time, he completely composed himself.

01:44:18.270 --> 01:44:20.930
He looked as sane as anyone in this room.

01:44:20.990 --> 01:44:35.545
He looked at me with a serious face and as lucid as the day is long, as clear and as rational as anyone in this room, he said, do you realize that they desperately need a great deal of help?

01:44:35.685 --> 01:44:38.165
And it just knocked my socks off.

01:44:38.165 --> 01:44:44.185
And in that moment, I saw a glimpse behind this blizzard of psychopathology.

01:44:44.900 --> 01:44:52.440
I saw a glimpse glimpse of that newness, that goodness, that dignity come through.

01:44:53.220 --> 01:45:02.525
Well, when you notice something good about someone, somehow they kind of pick up without a word being said that you saw something in them and they kind of see it themselves.

01:45:02.525 --> 01:45:08.225
And I think in that moment, Nick saw it in himself and he smiled at me.

01:45:08.685 --> 01:45:12.145
And all of a sudden it was like a spark, a relationship was formed.

01:45:12.365 --> 01:45:19.280
We had made contact and now I could bring in all of my psychology, and I was ready to treat.

01:45:19.340 --> 01:45:22.000
Well, I'm not gonna tell you that I cured schizophrenia.

01:45:22.940 --> 01:45:23.760
That's impossible.

01:45:24.940 --> 01:45:28.480
But what I can tell you is I helped this man have a better life.

01:45:29.885 --> 01:45:37.825
Thirty two years later, after a full career on that campus, my good friend, William Nordling, called me.

01:45:38.365 --> 01:45:39.965
And I knew he what he was up to.

01:45:39.965 --> 01:45:45.300
He and a handful of psychologists had started the Institute for Psychological Sciences.

01:45:46.320 --> 01:45:54.880
There's about a handful, it's doctor Nordling, doctor Sweeney, doctor Klowicki was there, doctor Palmer, and doctor Muncher.

01:45:54.880 --> 01:46:00.135
And they were doing the best they can to hold this place together with rubber bands, you see.

01:46:00.595 --> 01:46:01.655
They had no funds.

01:46:02.755 --> 01:46:04.195
And he said, well, come on out.

01:46:04.195 --> 01:46:12.080
It would be low pressure and you could just teach, some students and you could supervise and I thought that was a good idea.

01:46:12.460 --> 01:46:17.520
Well, doctor Nordling is he's just about my best friend and he's a wonderful, generous person.

01:46:17.580 --> 01:46:22.880
But he has one quality, he can sell snowballs to people in Alaska during the winter.

01:46:24.785 --> 01:46:32.245
And so I get to this place, and suddenly I'm steeped with twice the work that I have to pay.

01:46:32.785 --> 01:46:36.680
But you really couldn't complain because everybody was doing the same thing.

01:46:36.680 --> 01:46:47.420
We're trying to really realize the dictum of John Paul the second, that a good psychology is a psychology that's built on the Catholic conception of the person.

01:46:48.075 --> 01:46:58.575
And so we were trying to paste that together with people like doctor Vitz and some some, theologians like doctor Titus and doing it very imperfectly.

01:46:58.955 --> 01:47:10.940
Thank heavens for the legionaries of Christ, Because if we didn't have the legionaries of Christ, we never would have survived these fine priests that would sponsor us and somehow get the funds to keep us going.

01:47:10.940 --> 01:47:15.520
It was father Gil at first and then father John Hopkins, if you've ever met him.

01:47:15.665 --> 01:47:26.225
And then finally, father Charles, who I can honestly say, and I've said this many times, he is a rock upon which this university has been built.

01:47:26.225 --> 01:47:29.770
It wouldn't have existed if he didn't stay with us in all these years.

01:47:29.770 --> 01:47:50.885
But anyway, to cut to the chase after fifteen years and getting a great deal from the students themselves, I don't think the so called Catholic Christian meta model of the person would have ever developed if we didn't get feedback from each cohort of students to make us better and better and better.

01:47:51.185 --> 01:47:55.970
And even our students today have given us many contributions with dissertations.

01:47:56.590 --> 01:47:58.850
And now we have the meta model.

01:47:59.550 --> 01:48:09.250
It's the volume one of the Catholic Christian model of the person, edited by doctor Vitz, doctor Nordling, and doctor Titus.

01:48:10.085 --> 01:48:12.105
That we bequeath to you.

01:48:12.725 --> 01:48:17.465
We give that to you with strings attached, at least from my point of view.

01:48:18.085 --> 01:48:19.945
I think it has to go further.

01:48:20.885 --> 01:48:22.425
I think it's still developing.

01:48:23.045 --> 01:48:37.900
I think the next phase is to begin to write about the true application of this wonderful thinking and the practice of psycho, psycho psycho psychology, counseling, even spiritual direction.

01:48:38.775 --> 01:48:41.995
And so, I commission you to go forward and do that.

01:48:42.375 --> 01:48:44.795
Invest of your ability each in your own way.

01:48:46.935 --> 01:48:48.535
Let me finish with this.

01:48:48.535 --> 01:48:54.530
In in time, as you go through your careers, most of us will have been forgotten.

01:48:54.530 --> 01:49:00.710
I dare say, by the end of our your career, we will no longer resist in the mind of any living person.

01:49:01.490 --> 01:49:06.870
And I believe, because I think you will be greater than us, I believe you will be greater than us.

01:49:07.225 --> 01:49:09.485
I think you'll pass it on to more generations.

01:49:10.185 --> 01:49:15.965
But at the end of your career, you will have disappeared from the consciousness of any living person.

01:49:16.025 --> 01:49:21.485
They say that no person is remembered beyond two generations after their existence.

01:49:21.880 --> 01:49:23.580
Most of us remember our grandparents.

01:49:24.360 --> 01:49:27.500
Very few people can say very much about their great grandparents.

01:49:28.680 --> 01:49:29.980
That's not what's important.

01:49:31.000 --> 01:49:39.045
What's important is that the mission goes on, because we live in a culture that desperately needs this mission.

01:49:41.185 --> 01:49:42.485
One final word.

01:49:43.665 --> 01:49:54.380
As you go on in your profession, in a few weeks, probably less, you'll see a person who approaches you, and they'll be asking for help.

01:49:55.400 --> 01:49:58.280
Try something kind of like I did with Nick.

01:49:58.280 --> 01:50:03.880
Put, just for a moment, put your psychology aside, and just meet them where they're at.

01:50:03.880 --> 01:50:12.005
And with a little bit of luck, you may just see their goodness shine through in spite of all their worry.

01:50:12.225 --> 01:50:20.885
And when you do realize that you've just received grace, and when you contemplate it, you will see Christ.

01:50:21.960 --> 01:50:23.180
You will see Christ.

01:50:23.880 --> 01:50:29.420
Ladies and gentlemen, these are the best graduates in the entire country.

01:50:30.040 --> 01:50:35.100
They are just as confident as any other mental health graduates in our country.

01:50:35.935 --> 01:50:41.075
But they're great because they put Christ at the center of their work.

01:50:41.135 --> 01:50:43.395
God bless 2023.

01:51:22.730 --> 01:51:27.150
My name is Tom Cunningham, chairman of the board of directors.

01:51:27.770 --> 01:51:31.550
Here today to introduce monsignor James Shea.

01:51:33.765 --> 01:51:47.625
Monsignor James Shea received his bachelor's degree in licensure in philosophy from the Catholic University of America and a bachelor's degree in sacred theology from Gregorian University in Rome.

01:51:49.220 --> 01:52:07.665
After returning to North Dakota in 2002, he served as a teacher, a chaplain, and a pastor before being named the sixth president of the University of Mary in 2009 at just 34 years of age.

01:52:11.005 --> 01:52:17.160
Between 2020 and 2023, my senior Shay published three books.

01:52:18.260 --> 01:52:29.585
And these three books have had a great impact in the church, the new evangelization, and our very school of Divine Mercy University.

01:52:31.165 --> 01:52:44.540
The three books are from Christendom to Apostolic Mission, the vocation of the Catholic University professor, and The Religion of the Day.

01:52:46.200 --> 01:53:09.095
In each of these books, Monsignor Shea takes a fresh look at how our post Christian society has radically changed the cultural context for the church, the university, as well as everyday Christians, and how we can best respond to that change.

01:53:11.170 --> 01:53:17.030
We have made great use of Monsignor Shea's wisdom at Divine Mercy University.

01:53:18.290 --> 01:53:25.830
We encourage their use, buy copies for faculty, for staff, and friends of DMU alike.

01:53:28.235 --> 01:53:46.270
As a trailblazer in the renewal of the Catholic Academy and the new evangelization, we are honored to award Monsignor James Shea this doctorate of humane letters, honoris causa.

01:54:49.860 --> 01:54:52.760
I'm, I'm terrified to give this speech.

01:54:55.915 --> 01:55:07.775
Two days ago, just as the University of Mary's board of trustees was convening for the annual reappointment of the president of the university, I lost my voice completely.

01:55:10.700 --> 01:55:15.360
I wasn't worried about losing my job, although maybe I should have been.

01:55:15.900 --> 01:55:23.680
But I was worried about losing my voice because I thought, what will I do if I come here and I'm not able to speak?

01:55:24.185 --> 01:55:27.725
What good is a commencement speaker who can't speak?

01:55:29.225 --> 01:55:30.205
He's useless.

01:55:32.745 --> 01:55:44.970
And then I thought about it a little bit and I realized that the graduates today have consecrated their lives to the care of those whose minds are in distress.

01:55:46.070 --> 01:56:08.000
And so I thought if I lose my voice, I'll just stand here useless and pathetic, and it will stimulate in each of the graduates the anterior cingulate cortex and waves of empathy will flow toward me and it will actually be okay.

01:56:10.620 --> 01:56:21.795
But then I thought some more, and I remembered that the families would also be here, and I have no idea what family of origin issues drove you into the behavioral sciences.

01:56:25.075 --> 01:56:27.415
And so then I was terrified again.

01:56:32.195 --> 01:56:33.175
I'm a wreck.

01:56:35.710 --> 01:56:40.530
Do you remember Monty Python had a song, I'm worried.

01:56:42.110 --> 01:57:05.860
In it, he sings about all the things that he's worried about, the Middle East fashions today, which he says are bad for our feet, his hair falling out, the baggage retrieval system they have at Heathrow Airport in London.

01:57:06.720 --> 01:57:11.300
And then about three quarters of the way through, he has this verse.

01:57:11.600 --> 01:57:16.975
He says, I'm worried about the very next verse.

01:57:17.515 --> 01:57:19.695
It isn't the best that I've got.

01:57:20.555 --> 01:57:26.175
I'm worried about whether I should go on or whether I shouldn't just stop.

01:57:31.230 --> 01:57:33.730
I'm worried about whether I ought to have stopped.

01:57:35.710 --> 01:57:43.865
I'm worried because it's the kind of thing I ought to know, and I'm worried about the baggage retrieval system they have at Heathrow.

01:57:45.845 --> 01:57:48.265
Well, I'll tell you what I'm really worried about.

01:57:48.565 --> 01:57:56.980
I'm worried that there's no adequate way for me fully to express my appreciation and my admiration for Divine Mercy University.

01:57:58.160 --> 01:58:06.340
I think that the work that's happening here and the contribution that Divine Mercy is making to the church and to our nation are irreplaceable.

01:58:07.345 --> 01:58:18.645
Father Charles, the work that you and your excellent and esteemed faculty are doing is wonderful, and it gives great joy, I'm sure, to God and to all the angels.

01:58:19.580 --> 01:58:39.045
At the University of Mary, we shamelessly and energetically use the Christian Catholic meta model of the person to infuse solid Christian anthropology into all of our programs in psychology and social work and criminal justice and counseling.

01:58:39.665 --> 01:58:41.925
I'm just so very grateful for that.

01:58:42.065 --> 01:58:55.230
And so the holy spirit is at work here, and I just am worried that there's no real way that I could fully express how much admiration and appreciation I have for what all of you are doing here.

01:58:56.010 --> 01:59:02.645
And then to receive this honorary doctorate, when I heard about it, I said, I don't deserve it.

01:59:02.705 --> 01:59:04.165
I don't deserve it.

01:59:05.425 --> 01:59:10.165
Then I thought a little bit more, and I thought, no, I think I do deserve it.

01:59:12.400 --> 01:59:15.300
In fact, I deserve more than an honorary doctorate.

01:59:15.840 --> 01:59:26.900
I think I deserve an earned doctorate in the behavioral sciences and abnormal psychology because I've spent fifteen years in higher education.

01:59:30.535 --> 01:59:41.435
If it sounds like I have a little bit of self pity about all of my exertions in higher education, it's because I have a lot of self pity.

01:59:44.430 --> 01:59:51.790
Two weeks ago, the Bishop of Helena, Montana delivered the commencement address at the University of Mary.

01:59:51.790 --> 01:59:53.890
We had 1,100 graduates.

01:59:56.675 --> 01:59:58.615
His name is Bishop Austin Vedder.

01:59:58.915 --> 02:00:07.415
He and I grew up on farms about 15 miles away from each other in the same county, although he's much older than I am.

02:00:07.970 --> 02:00:10.230
I've known him since I was a young boy.

02:00:10.850 --> 02:00:20.870
He told a story in the midst of his commencement address, which touches upon what I want to speak with you about today, and so I'm going to steal it.

02:00:21.575 --> 02:00:24.235
My patron saint today is not Saint Dymphna.

02:00:24.855 --> 02:00:27.835
It's Saint Dismas, the good thief.

02:00:30.215 --> 02:00:38.520
He told about when he was seven years old, his father on the farm gave him a pale calf.

02:00:39.620 --> 02:00:48.120
A pale calf is when a calf is born, it's allowed to nurse from its mother for a while, and then it's taken away.

02:00:48.815 --> 02:00:54.515
And the family drinks the milk, and the calf is fed formula out of a pail.

02:00:54.975 --> 02:00:56.275
That's a pale calf.

02:00:56.895 --> 02:01:11.160
So if you're seven years old and your father gives you a pale calf, you get to raise it until it's an 800 pound steer, and then you sell it and you get to keep the money, which is a pretty good deal for a first grader.

02:01:13.380 --> 02:01:22.545
So bishop Vetter's father gave him a pale calf, and he fed it and cared for it and it got sick.

02:01:23.965 --> 02:01:27.825
And so he gave it more formula, which was a mistake.

02:01:28.925 --> 02:01:36.110
And then he didn't let it outside of the barn, which also was a mistake, and the calf died.

02:01:38.330 --> 02:01:42.670
So the little boy sat down in the straw and started to cry.

02:01:44.170 --> 02:01:46.350
And his dad came out into the barn.

02:01:47.385 --> 02:01:48.925
He said, why are you crying?

02:01:50.745 --> 02:01:54.045
He said, dad, I tried so hard.

02:01:54.665 --> 02:01:58.105
I did everything I could, and the calf died.

02:01:58.105 --> 02:01:59.725
Dad, I did my best.

02:02:00.780 --> 02:02:03.200
And his dad said, no, you didn't.

02:02:05.100 --> 02:02:07.520
Doing your best would have been to tell me.

02:02:08.780 --> 02:02:12.080
Doing your best would have been to ask me for help.

02:02:13.785 --> 02:02:22.925
And so his dad gave him another pale calf, and the second calf got sick too.

02:02:24.985 --> 02:02:39.040
But then he told his dad, and his dad came out and they got this little calf medicine, and they let it out of the barn into the fresh air and the sunshine, and it still died.

02:02:42.605 --> 02:02:51.745
And even though he was sad, it wasn't devastating this time because he had told his dad and he wasn't all alone.

02:02:53.485 --> 02:03:09.380
This is a powerful lesson about God, but it's also an important lesson about the work the apostolate in the ministry that the graduates of Divine Mercy University are embarking upon.

02:03:10.955 --> 02:03:20.575
The world is brimming with people out there who are trying so hard, and they don't feel like they're getting anywhere.

02:03:21.595 --> 02:03:26.720
And bad things happen to them, and they're all alone.

02:03:28.540 --> 02:03:48.055
And in the midst of a world like that, God has put his hand on your shoulder, and he's touched your mind with wisdom and with training so that you can go out and shatter that loneliness.

02:03:48.435 --> 02:03:50.615
And the past is the age of regret.

02:03:51.420 --> 02:04:05.680
There's also a sense in which we can't do anything about it, but the present is here now, which also, by the way, is where God is so that we don't have to be alone in the midst of our lives.

02:04:06.615 --> 02:04:12.075
Mother Teresa said, yesterday is gone, tomorrow has not yet come.

02:04:12.695 --> 02:04:14.235
Let us live in the presence.

02:04:15.815 --> 02:04:17.275
It's all we've got.

02:04:18.295 --> 02:04:24.730
When we look at the life of Jesus, what is revealed to us is quite astonishing.

02:04:26.070 --> 02:04:41.235
Notice how the Lord, though he is constantly in movement, though his energies and exertions do not flag, he's not setting out to achieve anything.

02:04:42.655 --> 02:05:02.350
He puts the full force, all of the power of his soul into anything or anyone that he is present to at any given time as if he has nothing else to do and no one else to see or to meet.

02:05:04.425 --> 02:05:09.325
He doesn't focus upon the achievement of any great goal.

02:05:10.585 --> 02:05:15.405
Instead, his preoccupation is to do the will of the father.

02:05:16.170 --> 02:05:26.030
And so he makes himself present to the circumstances no matter what they are and in doing so, he revolutionizes the circumstances.

02:05:28.345 --> 02:05:41.885
It's quite extraordinary and this then is the criterion by which his life is judged because by any other measure, if we're honest, the life of Jesus is an epic failure.

02:05:42.960 --> 02:05:46.420
The majority of people who heard him left him.

02:05:47.360 --> 02:05:52.260
His closest friends abandoned him in his hour of greatest need.

02:05:53.440 --> 02:06:00.485
When he instructed his disciples to go out to preach, he said if there's a town that doesn't receive you, move on.

02:06:01.345 --> 02:06:14.080
How can we explain or begin to understand this evident indifference about how the gospel would be received when he had come into the world to save the world.

02:06:15.500 --> 02:06:37.565
It's because he had come to do the will of the father and be in communion with his father at all moments was what he had come to do and what he did at all times to include when he was hanging on the cross because the cross is then the image of all our hope.

02:06:39.400 --> 02:06:55.375
What would it mean then for us to to seek perfection not by our own efforts, but by gazing at the life of Christ and truly imitating Jesus in that regard.

02:06:56.955 --> 02:06:58.895
What would it mean to live like that?

02:06:59.995 --> 02:07:12.380
What it would what it what what would it mean to be like that when living in a family, at work, in a friendship, at prayer?

02:07:13.000 --> 02:07:14.300
It changes everything.

02:07:15.080 --> 02:07:42.710
It makes our whole life into a kind of presence, And this is the perfection which God offers to us, and it's the kind of presence which is especially necessary for those who are accompanying others in the midst of the turpitude and turbulence, the chaos and vicissitudes of human life in a fallen world.

02:07:44.210 --> 02:08:04.610
Saint John Henry Newman says that we have as our vocation to be used by God for his purposes, not to accomplish or to shape or to form.

02:08:06.350 --> 02:08:11.170
This, my friends, is a great relief for us.

02:08:12.215 --> 02:08:20.555
I remember early on fourteen years ago, fifteen years ago, when I was first the president of the University of Mary.

02:08:21.015 --> 02:08:21.975
I was 34.

02:08:21.975 --> 02:08:23.515
I didn't know what I was doing.

02:08:24.570 --> 02:08:27.550
I was more incompetent then than I am now.

02:08:28.170 --> 02:08:28.670
More.

02:08:30.170 --> 02:08:30.670
More.

02:08:33.050 --> 02:08:51.835
And I felt like I would never be able to achieve what I had been given to do, that the weight placed on my shoulders was too great, and that even if I worked all day and all night and never rested, even if I allowed myself to be grounded to dust, nothing would come of it.

02:08:52.450 --> 02:08:59.590
And then the Lord in his mercy, in his divine mercy spoke to me in prayer, just a simple word.

02:09:00.290 --> 02:09:03.750
He said, you don't have a lot of things to do.

02:09:04.290 --> 02:09:05.830
You have one thing to do.

02:09:06.365 --> 02:09:08.225
Stay in communion with me today.

02:09:09.645 --> 02:09:11.185
You have one thing to do.

02:09:11.725 --> 02:09:16.305
Just stay in communion and tell me what you need.

02:09:17.405 --> 02:09:18.705
Tell me about it.

02:09:21.400 --> 02:09:22.460
Calves die.

02:09:24.200 --> 02:09:25.340
Calves die.

02:09:26.040 --> 02:09:34.860
The first calf died and the result was devastation and tears upon the straw.

02:09:36.465 --> 02:09:41.125
The second calf died and the result was communion with the father.

02:09:42.225 --> 02:09:47.445
It looked like the same thing had happened and yet they were completely different.

02:09:50.670 --> 02:09:57.890
That transformation is the mission of every graduate of Divine Mercy University.

02:09:59.230 --> 02:09:59.730
Congratulations.

02:10:28.690 --> 02:10:29.590
Good afternoon.

02:10:31.125 --> 02:10:37.625
We will begin with the presentation of certificates to the graduates of the spiritual direction certificate program.

02:10:39.685 --> 02:10:42.665
Will the following please come forward and take your place?

02:10:43.950 --> 02:10:50.050
Maria Brackett, program director, and father Charles Sikorsky, university president.

02:11:01.905 --> 02:11:04.005
Will the graduates please come forward?

02:11:06.945 --> 02:11:23.530
The students, over a period of two years, gained theological knowledge of the Catholic spiritual tradition, learning from the integrative understanding of the human person, and training in interpersonal skills needed to minister with professionalism as a spiritual director.

02:11:24.470 --> 02:11:29.495
Each student also completes sixty hours of practicum accompanied by supervision.

02:11:30.915 --> 02:11:35.415
The faculty certifies that each candidate has completed all requirements necessary.

02:11:36.675 --> 02:11:42.135
The university is pleased to award certificates to our graduates of the spiritual direction certificate program.

02:11:44.190 --> 02:11:46.770
As I call your name, please come forward.

02:11:48.750 --> 02:11:51.970
Mary Susan Burnett, Harrison, Virginia.

02:12:07.005 --> 02:12:10.465
Monica Galindo Rivera, Novi, Michigan.

02:12:24.665 --> 02:12:27.885
Delsey Munoz Percy, Doral, Florida.

02:12:42.730 --> 02:12:45.550
Gina Pavela, Bronx, New York.

02:13:02.305 --> 02:13:03.685
Conrad Sigona.

02:13:04.145 --> 02:13:05.445
Newport, New York.

02:13:21.345 --> 02:13:23.605
We also include those in abstention.

02:13:24.865 --> 02:15:08.945
Donna Anderson, Bridget Barker, Gretchen Bell, Craig Biscoff, Father Jason Brooks, Therese Birch, Caitlin Byrne, John Paul Gilbert Concepcion, Claire Coridoni, Henry Kumari, Kimberly Currington, Valerie Duran, Father Javier Flores, Alain Gagne, Sarah Gagne, Luz Gutierrez Olvera, Matthew Ingold, deacon George Keenan, deacon Peter Kennedy, Catherine Lambert, Catherine Landa, Jennifer Linder, Karen Maricle, Kathy Mattingly, father Andrew Mckinkar Burenu, Jeanette Montano, Marie Jose Pago, Mary Noland, Maria Fernanda Penafiel Ochoa, Iris Pollock, Gabriela Roloba Portilla, Jean Schmitz, Judy Shallcross, Ignacio Taboada, Margaret Tress, Elizabeth Vandevoord, Craig Wiesmeyer, Govinda Willard, Perley Wilson Natal, Marilis Yokeel, Deacon Michael Zaccariello.

02:15:13.245 --> 02:15:15.825
Congratulations to our spiritual direction certificate.

02:15:26.640 --> 02:15:30.660
We have reached the point in the ceremony at which degrees are to be conferred.

02:15:31.760 --> 02:15:39.705
The university's degree granting authority is contained in the charter granted to Divine Mercy University by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Graduates, you may now move your tassel from the right to the left.

02:55:52.150 --> 02:55:54.010
Let's congratulate our graduates.

02:56:19.950 --> 02:56:28.050
Father president, DMU faculty, family, friends, and honored guests, it is my great joy and honor to present the class of 2024.

02:57:20.380 --> 02:57:33.505
Since our foundation in 1999, Divine Mercy University has converged 664 master's graduates and 102 doctoral graduates.

02:57:34.605 --> 02:57:46.050
In the pursuit of their vocation to heal, our growing number of alumni are making an impact in the field of psychology, in the culture, in the church, and in the world.

02:57:47.470 --> 02:57:51.090
This ever expanding reach of the mission is truly inspiring.

02:57:53.950 --> 02:58:12.840
To mark and recognize this history, the university presents the Distinguished Alumni Award to a graduate who has made significant contributions to society and whose accomplishments, affiliations, and careers have honored the legacy of excellence of their alma mater.

02:58:14.180 --> 02:58:29.445
Recipients of this award are accomplished in the following areas: professional achievement, leadership, service to the community, and faithful advancement of the mission and vision of the university.

02:58:31.104 --> 02:58:42.370
It is with great pride and joy that we present the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award to doctor James Hernandez, class of 2016.

02:58:54.555 --> 02:59:08.575
Doctor Hernandez, while he and his wife raised their growing family, studied and graduated from the Institute for Psychological Sciences with a doctorate in clinical psychology, Psy d, in 2016.

02:59:09.721 --> 02:59:14.380
He completed his postdoc at Catholic Social Services in Lincoln, Nebraska.

02:59:15.880 --> 02:59:21.021
Subsequently, he moved to Covington, Louisiana and started a private practice.

02:59:22.495 --> 02:59:34.115
The community needs and the needs of new therapists seeking an integrated approach to therapy led him to open a group practice, Sacred Space Psychotherapy.

02:59:35.580 --> 02:59:41.439
He currently has three other therapists working with him and plans on taking a new intern in May.

02:59:42.939 --> 02:59:47.920
Doctor Hernandez is married with five children and another one on the way.

02:59:48.975 --> 02:59:54.915
When he is not at work, he enjoys being with his family and coaching his children's sports teams.

02:59:55.774 --> 03:00:00.995
He may also be seen on a pickleball court or soccer field from time to time.

03:00:03.140 --> 03:00:15.320
Doctor Hernandez is a true representative of distinguished alumni with significant contributions to the field of psychology and constant dedication to the mission and vision of the university.

03:00:16.495 --> 03:00:20.835
We are honored to present doctor James Hernandez with this award.

03:00:22.415 --> 03:00:25.395
Father Charles, please come forward with the award.

03:00:26.095 --> 03:00:28.675
Doctor Hernandez, please come forward.

03:01:10.620 --> 03:01:17.105
Monsignor Shea, I I share your terror, but it's it's not because I lost my voice.

03:01:17.165 --> 03:01:23.585
It's because I have to follow doctor Scruffani and you, and I'm at the end of this ceremony.

03:01:23.886 --> 03:01:29.630
And I know that everybody's ready to go, so I'll try to be brief.

03:01:30.410 --> 03:01:38.910
My main talk is or my main points are about following the lord's will and trusting him and my experiences of that.

03:01:40.175 --> 03:01:46.515
When I was in high school and going through my conversion, I really liked this girl.

03:01:48.255 --> 03:01:52.595
And during that time in my life, I was on a really bad track.

03:01:53.150 --> 03:01:58.210
It's amazing how many times or how many mistakes you can make before you're 18.

03:02:01.391 --> 03:02:03.650
But I remember praying to the lord.

03:02:04.590 --> 03:02:07.090
Lord, please make this work out.

03:02:08.984 --> 03:02:15.965
This woman could really help me, but I remember something inside of me coming up.

03:02:17.385 --> 03:02:20.925
And it and it was praying, but your will be done.

03:02:21.880 --> 03:02:31.900
And that came from somewhere, and I don't know if it was from catechism or just hearing it in school, but it came from deep inside of me.

03:02:32.360 --> 03:02:39.755
And I knew that that was the best prayer, And I am so glad that I did not marry that woman.

03:02:41.495 --> 03:02:43.734
And that is not because she is a bad woman.

03:02:43.734 --> 03:02:45.835
She's actually a great woman, and I know her.

03:02:46.375 --> 03:02:55.410
But it's because I'm married to her, Emily Hernandez, and she is the best woman for me.

03:02:56.190 --> 03:02:59.490
She is the one that will help me to get to heaven.

03:02:59.950 --> 03:03:02.051
And let me tell you a little bit about that.

03:03:02.511 --> 03:03:11.165
Whenever I first met her and the excitement that I experienced, I really wanted it to work out way more than before.

03:03:11.545 --> 03:03:17.325
I really liked her, and she was everything that I was thinking that I needed.

03:03:17.385 --> 03:03:23.990
And I remember praying, Lord, please make this work out, but your will be done.

03:03:24.610 --> 03:03:29.350
And that was my prayer along the relationship as we went along.

03:03:30.850 --> 03:03:38.625
And the Lord was guiding me that whole time, and he was the one that was praying that prayer because I did not want to pray that prayer.

03:03:38.625 --> 03:03:39.845
I wanted to pray.

03:03:40.385 --> 03:03:41.685
Just make it work out.

03:03:44.800 --> 03:03:49.460
But as it went along, I became more and more sure that she was the one.

03:03:50.000 --> 03:03:52.100
I did not have a 100% certainty.

03:03:52.720 --> 03:03:56.659
It was more like 70%, maybe 65.

03:03:57.575 --> 03:03:59.915
But that felt like a good bet, so I took it.

03:04:02.056 --> 03:04:05.835
And that was the best bet that I have made in my entire life.

03:04:08.615 --> 03:04:14.930
And the reason I made that bet was because I knew that she loved the lord, and that was the most important thing.

03:04:15.950 --> 03:04:19.550
And I knew that then, but I know that in a different way now.

03:04:19.550 --> 03:04:27.890
I know that in a much deeper way now because we have been through a lot of fights, and we have been through a lot of arguments and not seeing eye to eye.

03:04:27.995 --> 03:04:31.535
And she has to deal with my imperfections, which are many.

03:04:31.835 --> 03:04:37.615
And I have to deal with her imperfections, which are very few, which is not fair, but that's the way it goes.

03:04:39.915 --> 03:04:44.660
But I know it in a deeper way because I've seen her striving for the Lord.

03:04:45.520 --> 03:04:49.760
And each time that we fight, we go to him and come back, and it deepens our love.

03:04:49.760 --> 03:04:53.540
And because of all of those difficulties, our love has deepened.

03:04:53.600 --> 03:04:55.780
And this is the way that love goes.

03:04:56.255 --> 03:05:00.675
This is the way that the lord's gifts are, is that they're always deeper.

03:05:00.734 --> 03:05:02.415
There there's always more.

03:05:02.415 --> 03:05:09.250
It's not like a Christmas gift when you pray, and it's like, lord or you you ask your parents, you know, like, come on.

03:05:09.250 --> 03:05:10.850
I really I really want this.

03:05:10.850 --> 03:05:20.865
I'm just realizing that, but I'm gonna let you it's not like a Christmas gift where you where you want something and then you you get it, and then two weeks later, it's gone.

03:05:21.105 --> 03:05:23.825
The lord's gifts are always more than that.

03:05:23.825 --> 03:05:27.186
They're always deepening because that's the way he is.

03:05:27.186 --> 03:05:28.405
He's full of surprises.

03:05:31.905 --> 03:05:39.960
This this whole process also played out with whenever I was seeking to figure out what did I what did I want to do with my life.

03:05:40.420 --> 03:05:41.560
I was in college.

03:05:42.340 --> 03:05:44.440
I changed my major five times.

03:05:45.460 --> 03:05:51.765
By the end of it, I knew that I wanted to help people, and I knew that I wanted to integrate it with my faith.

03:05:52.065 --> 03:05:55.845
And I found out about IPS, and I was excited.

03:05:55.905 --> 03:05:58.225
I was like, this is the way.

03:05:58.225 --> 03:06:00.565
This is what the lord wants of me.

03:06:00.880 --> 03:06:03.939
And so I prayed, lord, please let this work out.

03:06:04.399 --> 03:06:08.420
And I also prayed that your will be done, and I applied.

03:06:09.040 --> 03:06:10.420
And I didn't get in.

03:06:11.439 --> 03:06:13.200
And so I just wanna give you a tip.

03:06:13.200 --> 03:06:21.285
Whenever you go to an interview and they ask you your strengths and weaknesses, it is not time to confess your sins.

03:06:25.985 --> 03:06:29.125
Nevertheless, that was the best thing for me.

03:06:29.561 --> 03:06:31.580
It taught me how to face failure.

03:06:31.960 --> 03:06:33.900
It taught me how to face embarrassment.

03:06:35.160 --> 03:06:36.381
It taught me perseverance.

03:06:37.080 --> 03:06:42.301
I had to go back and take more psychology classes because that was not my major.

03:06:42.725 --> 03:06:45.045
I learned a lot from online classes.

03:06:45.045 --> 03:06:47.305
Back then, they had stuff online as well.

03:06:53.284 --> 03:06:55.604
But it was the best thing for me.

03:06:55.604 --> 03:07:00.000
And, also, what it did was it allowed me to marry my my wife.

03:07:00.000 --> 03:07:05.620
We got we got married during that year, so I didn't have to be away for that whole first year of graduate school.

03:07:06.080 --> 03:07:07.920
The Lord knows what he's doing.

03:07:07.920 --> 03:07:10.260
His timing is always right.

03:07:14.265 --> 03:07:18.845
This whole pattern has played out over and over in my life.

03:07:20.104 --> 03:07:23.805
Like they said, I have five kids and a six on the way.

03:07:24.825 --> 03:07:27.005
Five of those six kids were surprises.

03:07:30.460 --> 03:07:33.200
And most of the time, I was excited about the surprises.

03:07:33.420 --> 03:07:37.601
Sometimes it's like when somebody surprises you and you're like, oh, thank you.

03:07:40.381 --> 03:07:45.325
But, again, the Lord's gifts are always deeper.

03:07:45.385 --> 03:07:51.005
They're always more long lasting because he can see more than we can see.

03:07:51.145 --> 03:07:54.445
We cannot see past our nose, or at least I can't.

03:07:54.940 --> 03:07:59.040
And that is why it's always better to lean on him.

03:08:00.141 --> 03:08:02.721
And that is what I have learned throughout this time.

03:08:03.980 --> 03:08:06.061
They also asked me to talk about what I'm doing.

03:08:06.061 --> 03:08:08.960
They already said what I'm doing, but I'll I'll I'll say it again.

03:08:12.274 --> 03:08:18.854
Starting my private practice, whenever I jumped and and and went in, it was after my postdoc.

03:08:19.235 --> 03:08:20.935
I jumped, went back to Louisiana.

03:08:21.235 --> 03:08:22.595
I knew someone over there.

03:08:22.595 --> 03:08:26.811
She helped me to to get started, and that was a great gift.

03:08:27.271 --> 03:08:41.235
But the first two months of my my practice, I didn't it took me a month and a half to get my license just because of the board stuff, which that's something that y'all should all think about is that that sometimes takes time.

03:08:41.535 --> 03:08:42.756
So I didn't have my license.

03:08:43.455 --> 03:08:47.375
I found out that we were having our fourth kid, and I didn't have clients.

03:08:47.375 --> 03:08:49.796
For for the first two months, I had two clients.

03:08:49.855 --> 03:08:51.955
And so I was scared out of my mind.

03:08:52.989 --> 03:08:58.449
But the lord provided the entire time because that's what he always does.

03:08:59.550 --> 03:09:03.409
So with that said, I I'd always wanted a a group practice.

03:09:05.886 --> 03:09:20.546
But the first five years of my practice, I was so focused on just trying to start up the practice, trying to be a father, coaching, and just engage with the work that it just didn't it it didn't come to my mind.

03:09:20.780 --> 03:09:24.800
But this time, the lord did it a little different because he does things different.

03:09:25.260 --> 03:09:27.500
And and he sent someone my way.

03:09:27.500 --> 03:09:31.580
It was a call from Steubenville, and they asked to come on, and I said, sure.

03:09:31.580 --> 03:09:33.420
Well, that must be god's will.

03:09:33.420 --> 03:09:38.694
And then a week later, I got someone from LSU, and I said, well, it definitely must be God's will.

03:09:39.075 --> 03:09:41.395
And then as we went along, it was a great year.

03:09:41.395 --> 03:09:43.335
I learned a lot through all of that.

03:09:44.115 --> 03:09:48.915
And then last summer, I got two more people from over here from DMU, and I was like, okay.

03:09:48.915 --> 03:09:51.635
Well, this definitely is the Lord's will.

03:09:51.635 --> 03:09:53.490
And so we started a group.

03:09:53.490 --> 03:10:07.351
It was called Sacred Space Psychotherapy, which I feel is very fitting for our work because of the space that we provide people to come in and to look at their lives and to help them to find meaning in their life.

03:10:08.975 --> 03:10:11.954
And it has been a major blessing in my life.

03:10:13.454 --> 03:10:13.774
Okay.

03:10:13.774 --> 03:10:15.295
So I'm almost at the end here.

03:10:15.295 --> 03:10:16.354
Two two points.

03:10:18.175 --> 03:10:20.354
One, life is an adventure.

03:10:21.250 --> 03:10:29.350
I know that it seems that in my story that it was just you you could be thinking in your mind, well, that was just the way that it was supposed to work out.

03:10:29.890 --> 03:10:31.649
And in some ways, you're right.

03:10:31.649 --> 03:10:36.630
It was the way that it was supposed to work out, but it did not feel like that.

03:10:37.065 --> 03:10:42.125
At every fork in the road, I did not know what the right answer was.

03:10:42.186 --> 03:10:44.285
I did not know how it would work out.

03:10:44.345 --> 03:10:46.585
I did not know if I would make it.

03:10:46.585 --> 03:10:53.330
Oftentimes, it felt like I'm I'm not going to make it, and I'm sure that many of you graduates can relate with that.

03:10:53.390 --> 03:11:00.670
Many times of going through dissertation or going through finals, it feels like the end is near, and you don't know.

03:11:00.670 --> 03:11:02.290
Is it going to work out?

03:11:04.265 --> 03:11:05.405
But yet it did.

03:11:05.465 --> 03:11:10.525
And, also, I do wanna give a message of hope that there is a life after finals.

03:11:10.745 --> 03:11:13.725
There is a life after dissertation, and it is great.

03:11:20.130 --> 03:11:21.189
My last point.

03:11:22.850 --> 03:11:24.949
Be careful where you aim.

03:11:27.569 --> 03:11:31.510
Whenever you're striving for something, you're going to move in that direction.

03:11:33.045 --> 03:11:36.266
And if you're successful at it, you will get what you want.

03:11:37.125 --> 03:11:39.865
But you may not always want what you get.

03:11:41.285 --> 03:11:44.186
One of my favorite quotes is by Thomas Merton.

03:11:45.950 --> 03:11:54.530
Most men climb the ladder of success only to realize at the end of their life that their ladder is on the wrong wall.

03:11:56.910 --> 03:11:59.650
Do not put your ladder on the wrong wall.

03:12:01.665 --> 03:12:03.125
Put your hope in Christ.

03:12:04.545 --> 03:12:15.125
Trust in his will, and he will give you a life that is full of abundance and gifts, and that is the pearl of great price.

03:12:16.040 --> 03:12:16.700
Thank you.

03:12:36.784 --> 03:12:38.165
So we're almost finished.

03:12:38.225 --> 03:12:42.484
We have one more one more award, but there's no talk after it.

03:12:43.024 --> 03:12:46.965
And then Bishop Gordon has graciously agreed to give us his final blessing.

03:12:47.480 --> 03:12:51.580
So, right now, we will have the president's service award.

03:12:53.000 --> 03:13:05.835
We have so many dedicated family faculty and staff members that work, above and beyond the call of duty to carry out our mission, And it's wonderful to be able to recognize this during graduation.

03:13:06.854 --> 03:13:19.891
So the president's service award, recipient is is selected annually by the president to recognize a member of our community who he believes consistently works to further the mission through selfless service to the institution.

03:13:21.790 --> 03:13:23.970
This year's present excuse me.

03:13:24.110 --> 03:13:31.915
This year's president's service award is awarded to Matthew Johansson, who is the director of our digital learning and innovation.

03:13:32.855 --> 03:13:41.275
He's worked for DMU for the past six years managing the Canvas learning environment for our online students and and even the on-site students use that as well.

03:13:42.000 --> 03:13:44.640
Matt is very intentional with his coworkers and students.

03:13:44.640 --> 03:13:47.140
He consistently puts people before the work.

03:13:47.600 --> 03:13:59.675
He understands that his job is not just to get work done or accomplish the next task, but to do whatever it takes to provide the best experience possible for our faculty, staff, and students.

03:14:00.854 --> 03:14:06.314
Matt is always looking at the bigger picture while never failing to be a servant to those around him.

03:14:06.694 --> 03:14:16.820
His ability to manage the many projects on his plate while also investing in the members of his team inspires us all to reach that same level of excellence and virtue.

03:14:17.439 --> 03:14:18.979
So, Matt, please come forward.

03:14:58.985 --> 03:15:05.006
So, as our commencement exercises come to a close, I would welcome Bishop Gordon to give the final blessing.

03:15:19.095 --> 03:15:24.715
I'm happy to give this final blessing right as we approach the hour of divine mercy.

03:15:27.414 --> 03:15:41.609
In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit, father of all mercies, you are present in our midst today with your love and your power.

03:15:43.189 --> 03:15:50.245
You look with joy on each person created out of love and called to love.

03:15:51.905 --> 03:16:14.240
So we thank you for the gift of each one of our graduating students on this memorable day As they step forward to continue following the pathway of life wherever it may lead, we ask you to pour out your blessing upon them.

03:16:15.805 --> 03:16:25.984
May they undertake the mission of healing with their gaze ever fixed on the merciful face of your wounded and risen son.

03:16:28.771 --> 03:16:37.910
May they in turn glimpse the face of Jesus in the countenance of each person you bring them to encounter.

03:16:40.530 --> 03:16:56.735
Draw all of our graduates to seek you, recognize you, and radiate your love to each of their brothers and sisters as they lead them to a place of healing and wholeness.

03:16:58.891 --> 03:17:08.110
May they be instruments of your divine mercy, binding the wounds of a frail and fallen humanity.

03:17:10.171 --> 03:17:24.575
We ask all of these blessings through the intercession of the blessed virgin Mary and the merits of your son, Jesus Christ, who is lord forever and ever.

03:17:25.300 --> 03:17:25.800
Amen.

03:17:26.180 --> 03:17:27.640
The lord be with you.

03:17:28.500 --> 03:17:34.199
May almighty god bless you, the father, the son, and the holy spirit.

03:17:34.580 --> 03:17:35.080
Amen.

03:17:46.646 --> 03:17:52.505
I will ask the faculty and graduates to please remain standing and ask everyone else to please be seated.

03:17:59.390 --> 03:18:03.170
This now concludes the 2024 commencement exercises.

03:18:03.789 --> 03:18:07.409
Please remain in your seats until graduates have exited the church.

03:18:08.096 --> 03:18:12.195
Thank you, and congratulations to the class of 2024.
