WEBVTT

00:00:15.125 --> 00:00:29.880
This is father Charles Sikorsky, president of Divine Mercy University, and I have the pleasure and blessing to be here with bishop Earl Fernandez of the Diocese of Columbus, Ohio, who has hosted the twenty twenty six Vocus Seat Conference.

00:00:29.880 --> 00:00:33.800
I just wanna congratulate you for such a great event, and thank you for all you're doing.

00:00:33.800 --> 00:00:35.480
Oh, it's great to have so many young people.

00:00:35.480 --> 00:00:39.240
We have about sixteen, seventeen thousand here in Columbus, and we're gonna host again next year.

00:00:39.240 --> 00:00:40.665
So we're looking forward to it.

00:00:40.905 --> 00:00:41.645
Very good.

00:00:41.945 --> 00:00:49.085
So, you know, bishop Earl, we've known each other for several years, real quick probably more than several years now.

00:00:49.465 --> 00:00:56.445
Our mission at DMU is to form Catholic counselors and psychotherapists, and now we have spiritual directors as well.

00:00:57.360 --> 00:01:02.400
Tell me from your perspective as bishop, why is mental health important to the church?

00:01:02.400 --> 00:01:06.320
Well, mental health right now well, because we we are temples of the holy spirit.

00:01:06.320 --> 00:01:14.825
We're we believe that we're a unity of body, spirit, and soul, and we wanna treat the whole person, help the whole person to achieve wholeness and holiness.

00:01:15.205 --> 00:01:20.085
And what we're seeing in The United States is a pandemic, really, of mental illness.

00:01:20.085 --> 00:01:21.945
People are alone, people are depressed.

00:01:22.405 --> 00:01:26.880
In many areas of the country, there are almost no mental health resources.

00:01:26.880 --> 00:01:34.820
In some counties within the Diocese of Columbus, the only mental health resources are within, the are at prisons and jails.

00:01:35.120 --> 00:01:45.125
And so there's a real shortage of mental health services, and I think Divine Mercy University would offer is also though is a spiritual component.

00:01:45.505 --> 00:01:55.700
We often have people come to us when I was a priest in Cincinnati, it was then the Institute for Psychological Sciences and, then became Divine Mercy University, well, I think, when I was in Washington DC.

00:01:56.240 --> 00:02:05.700
And what they do is we we priests, we need a place to which we can refer, and counselors whom we trust, our parishioners.

00:02:06.320 --> 00:02:18.135
And one of the things that Divine Mercy University offers is a Catholic Christian understanding of the human person made in God's image and likeness as unity of body and soul.

00:02:18.135 --> 00:02:29.320
And so, we need to be able to refer people who are struggling with gender dysphoria, with depression and so on, to people whom we know respect the gift of human life and respect the integrity of the body.

00:02:29.460 --> 00:02:44.365
And, unfortunately, there are not that many Catholic or even Christian counselors and many of the secular universities, so to speak, have already adopted a type of gender ideology or been infected with gender ideology and yet, mental illness is real.

00:02:44.425 --> 00:02:57.440
When I did my doctoral dissertation years ago, I studied the question of the transmission of HIV AIDS amongst married couples and what was the church's response to it and what was the response of political and scientific communities.

00:02:57.580 --> 00:03:06.665
At that time, a lot of my, friends from especially the African Continent, priests and religious, they had a phrase, you're either infected or affected.

00:03:07.045 --> 00:03:17.225
And mental health issues, either you have them or you know someone who has them and it it it's like a a tornado that comes through your whole family's life.

00:03:17.365 --> 00:03:28.490
And we want people to be able to have a healthy family life, families as a whole as well as individuals, to kind of be able to continue their their their walk through this world until we get to the next.

00:03:28.790 --> 00:03:29.990
Infected or I felt good.

00:03:29.990 --> 00:03:31.110
That's a great way to say it.

00:03:31.110 --> 00:03:31.350
Yeah.

00:03:31.350 --> 00:03:32.775
Because you We often forget.

00:03:32.775 --> 00:03:33.015
Right?

00:03:33.015 --> 00:03:39.435
But the the toll does takes on our families, you know, in marriages and and just when there's a family member themselves.

00:03:39.575 --> 00:03:39.815
Right.

00:03:39.815 --> 00:03:45.835
Like, you know, parents have a child with mental illness and it affects their own relationship in addition to that of the siblings.

00:03:46.010 --> 00:03:55.230
Or someone has a mental illness but it's not diagnosed, so there's still even though the stigma is less today than it was, there still is for some families and some cultures this this stigma.

00:03:55.290 --> 00:04:00.465
And so there isn't any treatment, but it's it's causing damage to the other members of the family as well.

00:04:00.465 --> 00:04:04.165
And so it's it's really, a a grave crisis.

00:04:05.025 --> 00:04:05.345
Yeah.

00:04:05.345 --> 00:04:10.225
When you think about the word psychology, psyche, right, comes from your Greek, the stole.

00:04:10.225 --> 00:04:10.545
Yeah.

00:04:10.545 --> 00:04:14.405
So science is study of the soul of man's inner life.

00:04:14.850 --> 00:04:18.870
And what to be more the phobias or sufficient and pathways together?

00:04:19.650 --> 00:04:21.810
Well We should be the experts, though.

00:04:21.810 --> 00:04:22.930
We should be the experts.

00:04:22.930 --> 00:04:36.605
And in fact, I would say people at Divine Mercy University are the experts in this, whether it's in in psychotherapy or, or in spiritual direction, right, the church has her wisdom, right?

00:04:36.605 --> 00:04:49.990
Unfortunately, a lot of things when I studied medicine before I entered the seminary, everything, and this was also true when I was doing my doctoral dissertation, everything was a pharmacological approach rather than a holistic approach.

00:04:50.210 --> 00:04:59.195
And so, I think one of the things in for for good medicine, for good therapy, you need to have trust in a relationship like the doctor patient relationship, the client counselor relationship.

00:04:59.195 --> 00:05:04.655
It's very important, the degree of transparency, leads to better outcomes.

00:05:05.195 --> 00:05:17.530
And I think when you have the relationship of trust, when you have someone of a common faith or a common starting point in terms of background and understanding of the person, it really does help to get better treatment.

00:05:18.550 --> 00:05:22.490
On and, you know, the you mentioned a relationship with with the therapy itself.

00:05:23.455 --> 00:05:29.475
Research is proving that that's one of the most important factors about the effect with which, of Therabody.

00:05:29.695 --> 00:05:39.000
And so if someone aligns with your values and your worldview and your belief system, it's just a much easier way to build it more, you know, to get that person.

00:05:39.300 --> 00:05:39.540
Right.

00:05:39.540 --> 00:05:53.480
And then I think one of the things is is that the approach taken by those who are graduates of Divine Mercy University is to meet a person where he or she is at, but also to do so the way Jesus would have encountered a person.

00:05:54.075 --> 00:05:54.395
Right?

00:05:54.395 --> 00:06:02.735
Sees the person who is hurting, who is wounded, who is in need of healing, both phys sometimes physical healing, but sometimes deep interior healing.

00:06:02.795 --> 00:06:08.840
And then there can be a, kind of a, an approach to say, why is this person here?

00:06:08.900 --> 00:06:10.020
What does this person need?

00:06:10.020 --> 00:06:11.880
What are they really looking for?

00:06:12.100 --> 00:06:23.365
And what is the proper remedy to bring about deep interior healing, their actual physical and mental healing that they need to help them continue their journey, their ongoing conversion.

00:06:24.625 --> 00:06:33.185
And one of the reasons we changed the name of Divine Mercy University was to remind us, we're not just here to be good technical experts.

00:06:33.185 --> 00:06:33.425
Right?

00:06:33.425 --> 00:06:44.410
We need to form the heart and bring God's love and mercy into the equation, both for the clients, but also for our students, who are gonna be learning that we get to form their hearts as well to go out and do that work.

00:06:44.550 --> 00:06:47.270
Well, I think in a professional way, they're clients.

00:06:47.270 --> 00:06:55.895
But I used to have a I knew a priest once who would keep an hours only nine to five and he would speak to us about pastoral ministry and speak of parishioners as clients.

00:06:55.895 --> 00:07:16.430
The clients will come only between nine and five and it's very important to preserve your your own time, but when you meet a person who is in need, medicine is essentially an encounter between a person who has the power to heal, if you will, and the and the skill set to bring about the healing that this other person, with equal dignity, needs.

00:07:16.430 --> 00:07:25.915
And we see a a fellow human being really trying suffering and all of Jesus healing ministry could be seen within the context of the coming and the in breaking of the kingdom of God.

00:07:25.915 --> 00:07:29.915
And I think that's what part of what this type of ministry really is.

00:07:29.915 --> 00:07:33.375
It's an extension of Christ's own ministry and the proclamation of the kingdom.

00:07:34.100 --> 00:07:38.420
So you mentioned scarcity as one of the big needs for the the diocese and the church.

00:07:38.420 --> 00:07:44.680
What are some others some areas where you see a real need today, for counselors and and therapists?

00:07:44.740 --> 00:07:53.695
Well, I'll I'll let me talk first about spiritual directors because our you know, there's a priest shortage nationally and the number of priests available to do spiritual direction is diminishing.

00:07:53.995 --> 00:08:07.410
I'm sure deacons can do it, but we also have a lot of lay people who are getting some training in spiritual direction and that can be very helpful for those maybe who don't have, kind of mental illness or mental health issues and so there's that dimension.

00:08:07.550 --> 00:08:10.830
Then there's a crossover between mental health issues and spiritual issues.

00:08:10.830 --> 00:08:14.430
Sometimes you also see this in the ministry, of exorcism, for example.

00:08:14.430 --> 00:08:15.890
You have to be very discerning.

00:08:16.455 --> 00:08:30.150
We see this, you have a lot of people who can clinically treat or with with, you know, psychotherapeutic drugs treat mental illness and depression and so on and so forth, but are they considering the the the, spiritual needs of the person?

00:08:30.310 --> 00:08:38.970
Addictive behaviors, there are a lot of programs that deal with addiction, but that, again, don't account for the spiritual component to help people to be successful.

00:08:39.030 --> 00:08:48.335
We see that, we have, like, Open Doors Ministry here in Columbus, for example, that exists to provide spiritual accompaniment and so there's this personal accompaniment.

00:08:48.335 --> 00:08:55.155
But, here in the city of Columbus, for example, Columbus is one of the fastest growing is the fastest growing city in The United States.

00:08:55.455 --> 00:09:00.330
It's between depending on who you ask, it's between the eleventh and fourteenth largest city in The United States.

00:09:00.330 --> 00:09:02.590
In the city, we have plenty of resources.

00:09:02.730 --> 00:09:07.790
Maybe even with the Ohio State University, not all of them follow a Catholic Christian anthropology or an approach.

00:09:08.205 --> 00:09:09.745
But what about the rural areas?

00:09:09.885 --> 00:09:14.205
I've got some rural areas like one Catholic hospital that serves six counties.

00:09:14.205 --> 00:09:20.625
If that hospital goes away, those people are without medical care, but mental health resources are even more scarce.

00:09:20.925 --> 00:09:28.370
So we know, for example, that a lot of a lot of people, as well as things, are slipping through the cracks.

00:09:28.750 --> 00:09:41.875
Some time ago, maybe this early in 2025, we had a mental health summit where we gathered everyone from different parishes and other ministries in the diocese together who are addressing the issues, of mental health.

00:09:41.935 --> 00:09:53.800
They have a summit just to listen, to understand better what are the issues, where are the scarcity of resources, what are parishes actually doing, and now we're beginning to look for someone who can coordinate the efforts for the diocese.

00:09:53.800 --> 00:10:03.180
Because it's not that nothing is happening, but too little is happening to meet the great demands that, that, that parents and family members are and individuals are facing.

00:10:03.625 --> 00:10:05.465
And where do I refer them?

00:10:05.465 --> 00:10:12.265
I still don't have a good answer in my diocese and that's why I'm looking to, places like Divine Mercy University.

00:10:12.265 --> 00:10:20.880
This came up with Bishop Barron and Archbishop Gutziak, at the USCCB meeting, a year and a half or so ago, and there's this huge shortage.

00:10:20.880 --> 00:10:23.760
Again, Bishop John Dolan of Phoenix has also talked about this.

00:10:23.760 --> 00:10:25.760
There was just a story last week in the Vatican news.

00:10:25.760 --> 00:10:35.025
He's had three siblings, unfortunately, who have lost their lives to suicide and some people feel so desperate, feel like that there's no way out and all that's from the devil.

00:10:35.025 --> 00:10:39.125
I mean, we we, the church, have to be more ever more present.

00:10:39.345 --> 00:10:42.305
We can't just say what's somebody else's job or a therapist's job.

00:10:42.305 --> 00:10:48.030
It's the whole church's job and it's not the diocese's job to replace what's there, but to support.

00:10:48.330 --> 00:10:52.750
How can we best support what exists, and and then how can we enhance?

00:10:53.850 --> 00:10:56.910
And so I I like to think too, this also helps evangelization.

00:10:57.290 --> 00:10:57.610
Right?

00:10:57.610 --> 00:11:06.355
We have a forming an army of mental health apostles, so to speak, and spiritual directors who can go out and connect with people and and on a deeper level.

00:11:06.415 --> 00:11:07.935
Well, it's it's it does.

00:11:07.935 --> 00:11:09.055
And that's that's one thing.

00:11:09.055 --> 00:11:19.030
But the second is if we don't do it, the church was not there for my family, was not there for me in my time of need, but if we do do it, the church was ever present.

00:11:19.030 --> 00:11:26.410
They saw me in my woundedness and the church, the loving mother, tended to her sick child and nursed her back to health.

00:11:26.525 --> 00:11:28.945
I think that's also a very powerful narrative.

00:11:29.005 --> 00:11:34.925
Like, we're not inattentive, we're not just a bureaucracy, we're actually present in the lives, we're making a difference.

00:11:34.925 --> 00:11:49.880
And so, I think we can't always live in the world of ideas, but actually have to say, this is the reality that is afflicting our families, and how can we bring about the presence of Christ in the human reality and bring his healing power to bear?

00:11:50.660 --> 00:11:56.040
Bishop, we're gonna do everything we can to to help form a pipeline of people who can help serve you in the diocese.

00:11:56.395 --> 00:12:00.795
And I'll tell you, I have a a young priest who's two years ordained, started your online program.

00:12:00.795 --> 00:12:07.275
I have another priest in the military archdiocese who's taken some classes, and I'm trying to encourage them finish their degrees because there's a great, great need.

00:12:07.275 --> 00:12:09.295
And there's a great need also in seminaries.

00:12:10.070 --> 00:12:14.490
Some some seminaries have, you know, residential counselors, others have nothing.

00:12:14.630 --> 00:12:17.210
You have to send them out to to to whomever.

00:12:17.270 --> 00:12:37.345
So I think that's also a need in the area of seminary formation or I, as a bishop, also see a lot of my clergy who didn't get proper formation or who because of the stress of the job are are depressed or developing mental illness or unhealthy behaviors, and I need someone who understands their way of life and their vocation and who respects it.

00:12:38.100 --> 00:12:38.340
Yeah.

00:12:38.340 --> 00:12:48.700
Priestly formation and ongoing formation and even priestly self care so that they can actually do what they have been called to do And in a hostile environment.

00:12:48.900 --> 00:12:51.640
So much goes into it, and they make such great sacrifices.

00:12:52.655 --> 00:12:56.275
And yet these human factors can, you know, make sometimes it's a surprise.

00:12:56.655 --> 00:12:57.055
Yeah.

00:12:57.055 --> 00:12:58.655
But we end up with with problems.

00:12:58.655 --> 00:13:02.835
And, and so, yeah, it's just so important for per for priestly person formation and perseverance.

00:13:03.055 --> 00:13:03.555
Exactly.

00:13:03.615 --> 00:13:04.115
Exactly.

00:13:04.255 --> 00:13:05.695
So Throughout the lifetime.

00:13:05.695 --> 00:13:27.785
And I think that's where, you know, Catholic mental health professionals can be a great resource to people like me who are bishops, who have my you know, one of my primary jobs is to be is to care for my priest, to be a spiritual father to them, to nurture the vocation of the men who are in the seminary, and to basically help them to learn how to empathize and to accompany families as well, and for them to be able to know.

00:13:27.785 --> 00:13:39.140
I'm not maybe not a mental health expert or a counselor, but I know whom I can trust, and the I can refer these parishioners of mine to these good Catholic counselors.

00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:40.500
Amen.

00:13:40.560 --> 00:13:40.960
Amen.

00:13:40.960 --> 00:13:42.320
Bishop, thank you so much.

00:13:42.320 --> 00:13:45.375
And, I know you're you gotta run, but it's really great.

00:13:45.455 --> 00:13:45.695
No.

00:13:45.695 --> 00:13:49.855
Thank you for all you're doing, for all Divine Mercy University is doing for the church in The United States.

00:13:49.855 --> 00:13:50.975
Well, God bless you, and thank you.

00:13:50.975 --> 00:13:51.215
Alright.

00:13:51.215 --> 00:13:51.695
God bless you.

00:13:51.695 --> 00:13:52.195
Thanks.
