00:00:06.960 --> 00:00:08.080
Hi, I'm Doctor.

00:00:08.080 --> 00:00:14.980
Benjamin Keyes and I am the director for the Center of Trauma and Resiliency Studies here at Divine Mercy University.

00:00:15.925 --> 00:00:23.385
We're very excited to offer this preview a little bit about who we are and how we've grown.

00:00:23.765 --> 00:00:54.465
Five years ago when I came to the university I was excited to be able to start a program that would train students and the community in aspects of trauma so that they could reach during times of crisis, disaster, or even situational trauma and to be able to be a force that would help others during times that are quite difficult and people suffer.

00:00:55.805 --> 00:01:14.260
I think we've been successful over the last five years in that we have partnered with Green Cross Academy of Traumatology in offering their array of courses that reach to very particular aspects of trauma.

00:01:15.975 --> 00:01:26.795
Their certifications are recognized by the Veterans Administration, FEMA and other organizations in both disaster trauma and long term trauma.

00:01:27.175 --> 00:01:30.235
So let me go over a little bit about our training levels.

00:01:30.640 --> 00:01:33.780
Our first two training levels have to do with compassion fatigue.

00:01:34.880 --> 00:01:42.260
First, compassion fatigue educator course is all about how to take care of yourself during times of crisis and disaster.

00:01:43.125 --> 00:01:45.465
And secondly, how do you work with other people?

00:01:46.885 --> 00:02:03.160
Particularly those that are close to you or family or co workers how do you reach people that sometimes have a hard time learning how or maintaining care for themselves during times of extreme stress.

00:02:04.580 --> 00:02:09.585
The third level of training is in field trauma.

00:02:09.645 --> 00:02:27.650
We want people to be able to react during times of natural disasters or times when there is a terrorist attack or threat and be able to reach to people and help.

00:02:28.110 --> 00:02:32.450
In the field we work with first responders and we work with survivors both.

00:02:33.790 --> 00:02:50.645
And then there are the long term trauma situations: human trafficking, sexual trauma, sexual abuse, domestic violence these are just to name a few working with suicide and others.

00:02:51.140 --> 00:03:13.705
We teach a wide array of grief and loss courses psychological first aid because we really want people trained and then those courses lead to certification as a certified clinical traumatologist And then long term are the master traumatologists in the field and the master traumatologists that are clinical.

00:03:15.685 --> 00:03:19.785
Just a few more courses, mostly in in the areas of complex trauma.

00:03:22.510 --> 00:03:29.010
And like I said, it reaches both to the field and to the clinical end of this.

00:03:30.030 --> 00:03:41.055
Our purpose is to train our students long before they get into their agencies or into private work so that they have a niche working in trauma.

00:03:41.515 --> 00:03:49.775
And as most of you know, working in the mental health field, trauma permeates just about every aspect of the field.

00:03:50.610 --> 00:04:00.710
So it's going to come up, you need to know this stuff, and here's a what I think is a fun way of, networking and getting together and working with others.

00:04:01.250 --> 00:04:03.410
The center does a few other things also.

00:04:03.410 --> 00:04:05.505
We're involved in research.

00:04:05.745 --> 00:04:17.045
My current interest in research center around human trafficking, compassion fatigue, and working with dissociative disorders particularly dissociative identity disorder.

00:04:19.020 --> 00:04:36.295
I'm in the midst of releasing a book on working with complex trauma mostly around the issues of sexual trauma and the research really shows that the models that we're using work well.

00:04:37.235 --> 00:04:39.175
We do a lot of advocacy work.

00:04:39.715 --> 00:04:43.735
We also deploy in fact we have some deployments coming up.

00:04:44.380 --> 00:05:03.055
We partner alongside of other organizations and we work with their social workers and their counselors in order to train their staff and to reach to the people that are struggling to survive.

00:05:03.995 --> 00:05:15.970
We try to purposely target countries where there is a lot of trauma and that we just might be able to make a very positive difference in the lives of the people that we touch.

00:05:17.630 --> 00:05:22.690
Your help and support always come in handy.

00:05:22.750 --> 00:05:31.645
We're always looking for people to partner with us, to go with us, to train and actually deploy and reach out.

00:05:32.185 --> 00:05:41.005
We came alongside of the Psychologists Without Borders which we've been told have helped a lot.

00:05:41.800 --> 00:05:43.260
We're pretty active here.

00:05:43.640 --> 00:05:45.080
We want you to join us.

00:05:45.080 --> 00:05:49.500
We want you to be part of the work that we're doing here at Divine Mercy University.

00:05:50.760 --> 00:06:00.705
I want to thank you for the time to be able to share this information with you and and really hope that it will inspire you to be part of what we're doing here.

00:06:02.205 --> 00:06:03.425
Thanks and God bless.
